The United Arab Emirates is preparing to launch its first passenger train service on June 30, aimed at enhancing connectivity between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah, with a journey time of approximately 105 minutes.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to commence its inaugural passenger train service on June 30, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s transportation infrastructure. This new service will connect Abu Dhabi, the capital, to Fujairah, a key emirate located on the eastern coast of the country, with an expected travel time of just one hour and 45 minutes (105 minutes). This development is anticipated to transform travel in the region and improve overall accessibility for residents and visitors alike.

Background of the UAE Railway Programme

The introduction of the passenger train service is part of the UAE Railway Programme, which was launched in 2021 under the ‘Projects of the 50’ initiative. This initiative aims to diversify the economy and enhance infrastructure, positioning the UAE for future growth and development. The railway network is designed to facilitate the movement of people and goods across the country, thereby supporting economic expansion and urban development.

The train service will be operated by Etihad Rail Passenger Services, a joint venture between Etihad Rail and Keolis, which is tasked with managing the day-to-day operations and customer service aspects of the network.

Inauguration of Key Infrastructure

On June 23, 2026, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, officially inaugurated the Mohammed bin Zayed City Station. This station is a pivotal hub in the UAE’s passenger rail network, establishing a direct link between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah. The station is expected to serve as a focal point for passengers traveling along this route, offering various amenities designed to enhance the travel experience.

Comprehensive Rail Network Expansion

The UAE’s plans extend beyond the Abu Dhabi-Fujairah route, with additional stations scheduled to be opened in the coming years. The Dubai Train Station and Al Dhaid Train Station are set to commence operations on September 30, 2026. Following this, stations in the Al Dhafra region will be completed by December 30, 2026, with the entire passenger rail network expected to be fully operational by March 30, 2027, when the Sharjah Train Station opens. This ambitious project aims to connect 11 cities and regions across the UAE, significantly enhancing intercity travel.

Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes’ Affairs and Chairman of Etihad Rail, spoke about the significance of the rail network in promoting urban development and connectivity. He emphasized, “The network will provide passengers with more convenient and flexible travel options, meeting the evolving needs of communities while supporting rapid urban development across the UAE.” This vision underscores the importance of integrating various modes of transport to facilitate seamless travel across the nation.

Features and Amenities of the New Train Service

The train stations along the Abu Dhabi to Fujairah route will be equipped with modern amenities, including cafes, restaurants, and retail outlets featuring several international brands. Onboard dining options will also be available, enhancing the overall travel experience for passengers. The trains are designed to operate at speeds of up to 200 km/h, and the service will consist of a fleet of 13 trains, each capable of accommodating up to 400 passengers.

Ticketing Information and Service Schedule

Ticket sales for the new rail service have already commenced, allowing passengers to book their journeys through the Etihad Rail mobile application and the official Etihad Rail website. Fares for the Abu Dhabi-Fujairah route are set to start at AED 55 for Comfort Class and AED 120 for Premium Class. The service will operate three times daily, with scheduled departures at 8:19 AM, 1:53 PM, and 6:39 PM. This schedule is designed to cater to both commuters and leisure travelers, further encouraging the use of public transport.

Implications for Urban Mobility and Economic Growth

The launch of the passenger train service represents a significant investment in the UAE’s transportation infrastructure, aligning with the government’s broader goals of enhancing connectivity and supporting economic growth. By providing a reliable and efficient means of travel, the rail service is expected to alleviate traffic congestion on major highways and promote the use of public transportation among residents and visitors.

Moreover, the establishment of a robust rail network is likely to have far-reaching implications for regional development. As cities become more interconnected, opportunities for business expansion, tourism, and cultural exchange are expected to grow. The integration of rail services with other modes of transportation, such as buses and taxis, will also facilitate easier access to urban centers and tourist attractions.

As the UAE continues to invest in its rail network, the impact on urban mobility and regional development is anticipated to be substantial. The successful implementation of this service could serve as a model for future transportation initiatives in the region, demonstrating the benefits of investing in sustainable and efficient public transport systems.
