The Keralam government is exploring potential sites in Thrissur and Kasaragod for the All-India Institute of Ayurveda, aiming to enhance Ayurvedic education and research in the state.

The government of Keralam is currently evaluating potential locations in the Thrissur and Kasaragod districts for the establishment of an All-India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), a significant initiative supported by the Ministry of Ayush. According to sources within the state’s health department, a draft proposal regarding this initiative has already been submitted to the central government.

Officials have identified over 200 acres of land in two promising locations: one near Athirappilly in the Vettilappara Grama Panchayat of Thrissur and another in the Cheemeni Grama Panchayat within the Neeleswaram block of Kasaragod. The land in Thrissur is managed by the Ex-Servicemen Cooperative Colony, which is chaired by the District Collector, while the site in Kasaragod is owned by the Plantation Corporation of India.

Background on the AIIA Initiative

The Ministry of Ayush had previously communicated with the Keralam government in June, initiating the site selection process for the establishment of AIIAs across the nation. The central government plans to set up three such institutes, reflecting an intent to expand high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate education, advance research, and enhance tertiary care services in Ayurveda. Financial allocations for this initiative have already been incorporated in the Union Budget for the fiscal year 2026-27.

Currently, there is only one All-India Institute of Ayurveda, located in New Delhi. This proposed expansion comes amid a growing recognition of the need for dedicated institutions that can foster Ayurvedic education, research, and practice across India. The establishment of more AIIAs underscores the increasing importance placed on integrating traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda into the broader healthcare framework.

Local Support and Industry Needs

The Ayurvedic Medicine Manufacturers Organisation of India (AMMOI) has been a vocal advocate for the establishment of the AIIA in Keralam. D. Ramanathan, the general secretary of AMMOI, has highlighted that the state possesses a robust Ayurvedic infrastructure, which includes 18 Ayurveda colleges, approximately 660 manufacturing units, and healthcare facilities with over 2,000 beds dedicated to Ayurvedic treatments. Furthermore, Keralam is home to numerous medicinal plant cultivation ventures and export units, reinforcing its significant role in the Ayurvedic industry.

Despite these advantages, Ramanathan points out a critical gap in research output, noting that while Keralam has substantial resources and practices in place, it lacks many peer-reviewed journals and citations for research-oriented work. He advocates for a practical collaboration between academic institutions, research entities, and the manufacturing sector to enhance the overall quality and credibility of Ayurvedic practices.

“Setting up an AIIA will be a step in the right direction,” Ramanathan stated, underscoring the potential benefits of such an institution not only for education and research but also for boosting tourism prospects. He indicated that Keralam attracts a significant number of foreign visitors seeking Ayurvedic treatments, suggesting that an AIIA could further enhance this appeal and support the local economy.

Implications for Keralam’s Ayurvedic Landscape

The establishment of an All-India Institute of Ayurveda in Keralam could signify a transformative step for the state’s Ayurvedic landscape. It would likely facilitate enhanced educational programs, promote high-quality research, and improve healthcare services based on traditional practices. As Keralam is often regarded as a hub for Ayurvedic medicine, the introduction of such an institution could affirm its position as a leader in this field.

This initiative also reflects broader trends in India, where there is an increasing recognition of the importance of traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda. As healthcare needs evolve, establishing institutions dedicated to these practices is crucial for integrating them into the mainstream healthcare framework.

The establishment of AIIAs aligns with the Indian government’s larger objectives of promoting traditional medicine, which has historically played a significant role in the country’s healthcare system. The recognition of Ayurveda’s potential in addressing various health issues is growing, particularly as more individuals seek holistic and alternative treatment options.

Stakeholder Perspectives

As discussions continue regarding the site selection and subsequent establishment of the AIIA, stakeholders from various sectors, including education, healthcare, and tourism, are closely monitoring developments. The outcomes of this initiative could have lasting impacts on Keralam’s economy, public health, and cultural heritage, marking a significant chapter in the state’s commitment to promoting and preserving Ayurvedic practices.

The anticipated establishment of the AIIA also raises questions about the potential for collaboration with existing Ayurvedic institutions and practitioners in the region. As Keralam is home to a number of well-established Ayurvedic colleges and clinics, the AIIA could serve as a catalyst for partnerships that enhance educational quality and research capabilities.

Moreover, the initiative may also stimulate interest in Ayurvedic tourism, which has become increasingly popular among both domestic and international travelers. Keralam’s reputation as a destination for Ayurvedic treatments positions it well to benefit from the establishment of a premier institution dedicated to the discipline.

In conclusion, the proposed All-India Institute of Ayurveda in Keralam represents a critical step toward strengthening the state’s position as a leader in Ayurvedic education and practice. With the support of various stakeholders and appropriate planning, the AIIA could pave the way for significant advancements in the field, ultimately benefiting both the local population and visitors seeking Ayurvedic healing.
