Pocono Manor, PA — August 8, 2026 — In a landmark celebration of Indian cultural heritage on North American soil, the Federation of Kerala Associations in North America (FOKANA) officially established a new Guinness World Record for the largest synchronized Chendamelam (Pancharimelam) ensemble performance today at the Kalahari Resorts & Convention Center in Pennsylvania.

Over 500 drum artists gathered on a single stage to execute the traditional Kerala percussion symphony in perfect unison. Thousands of attendees, delegates, and official adjudicators witnessed the historic spectacle during the 21st FOKANA International Convention.

A Thunderous Triumph of Unity

The venue reverberated with the complex acoustic cycles of the Pancharimelam, led by legendary percussive maestros Padmashri Mattannoor Sankarankutty Marar and Kalamandalam Sivadhasan Ashan. Performers ranged from veteran artists to young diaspora Malayalees raised in North America, all striking their chendas in absolute synchronization to meet the rigorous timing, rhythm, and intensity benchmarks mandated by Guinness World Record adjudicators.

Voices from the Organizers

For FOKANA leadership, today’s record represents the culmination of over a year of rigorous planning, logistical coordination across dozens of North American member associations, and hundreds of practice sessions.

”This moment transcends writing our name in the record books—it is a proud declaration of our cultural roots,” said Dr. Sajimon Antony, President of FOKANA. “When we envisioned bringing 500 Chenda artists together in the United States, many thought the logistical hurdles would be insurmountable. Seeing hundreds of drummers standing shoulder-to-shoulder today, creating one unified heartbeat on American soil, proves the power of our community’s dedication.”

Echoing these sentiments, FOKANA General Secretary Sreekumar Unnithan emphasized the event’s generational impact:

”Our primary mission at FOKANA has always been to pass the torch of our rich heritage to the next generation,” stated Unnithan. “To see teenagers who grew up in New York, Texas, or Ontario performing alongside master gurus from Kerala is deeply moving. Today’s Guinness achievement shows our youth that our traditional arts can captivate the world stage.”

Perspectives from the Stage and the Gurus

The ensemble was anchored by the guidance of world-renowned percussion masters who oversaw months of remote and in-person rehearsals to align the drummers across different time zones.

”Chenda is not merely a musical instrument; it is the soul of Kerala’s collective rhythm,” remarked lead guru Padmashri Mattannoor Sankarankutty Marar following the record verification. “To conduct an ensemble of this scale outside India required remarkable discipline. The passion and precision demonstrated by these performers today was nothing short of divine.”

For the local participants who spent weekends practicing in community centers across North America, the emotional resonance was overwhelming:

”Rehearsing the intricate tempos of Pancharimelam while balancing work and family was intense, but the energy on stage today made every second worth it,” said Rahul Nair, a participant from New Jersey who performed in the front row. “When the final beat echoed through the auditorium and the adjudicator announced the official record, tears were flowing across the stage. We didn’t just play music—we made history together.”

Cultural Impact and Legacy

The record-breaking Chendamelam performance served as the grand centerpiece of the four-day 2026 FOKANA Convention, which also featured a massive mega-Mohiniyattam dance performance and cultural summits. By bringing hundreds of traditional instruments across continents and unifying diaspora artists under one umbrella, FOKANA has set a new benchmark for cultural preservation in North America.

As the Guinness World Record plaque was formally presented to the executive committee, the Kalahari Convention Center erupted into cheers, marking August 8, 2026, as a defining date in Malayalee cultural history.
