Fifteen-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been selected for India’s upcoming T20 international series against Ireland and England, marking a significant milestone in Indian cricket.

On June 6, 2026, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been included in the national squad for the upcoming Twenty20 international series against Ireland and England. This selection highlights Sooryavanshi’s exceptional talent and performance during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, where he emerged as the leading run-scorer with a remarkable total of 776 runs in just 16 matches.

Sooryavanshi, a left-handed opening batter, has garnered significant attention for his batting prowess, breaking records throughout the IPL season. Notably, he surpassed the legendary Chris Gayle’s record for the most sixes in a single IPL season, further solidifying his reputation as one of cricket’s brightest young talents. His outstanding performance in the league led to him being named both the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and the Best Emerging Player, a rare achievement that has drawn accolades from both analysts and fans alike.

Historic Call-Up

If Sooryavanshi participates in either of the matches against Ireland or England, he will set a new record as the youngest player to represent the Indian men’s senior cricket team, surpassing cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar, who made his debut at the age of 16 in 1989. The selection panel chairman, Ajit Agarkar, emphasized Sooryavanshi’s potential, stating, “We’ve seen what he can do towards playoffs; he almost single-handedly carried Rajasthan Royals. Not just this season, he had a great start, and to back it up in a competition that is as competitive and high-pressure, he’s a game-changer. We’ve got high hopes for him, and he has picked himself.”

Leadership Changes in the Squad

In addition to Sooryavanshi’s inclusion, the BCCI has announced a significant change in the team’s leadership structure. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the new captain of the T20 international squad, replacing Suryakumar Yadav. Iyer, who previously led the Kolkata Knight Riders to victory in the IPL 2024, has demonstrated commendable form, contributing to his selection. Agarkar remarked on Iyer’s leadership, saying, “Led a team to [an] IPL title, and his own performances [have] been good. He was close to being part of the World Cup squad, in my opinion, was a ‘stand-out candidate.’”

The decision to replace Suryakumar Yadav follows a disappointing run of form leading up to the T20 World Cup, where he managed only 242 runs in nine innings. His highest score, an unbeaten 84 against the United States, stood out as a rare highlight. His performance in the IPL was similarly lackluster, where he accumulated just 270 runs in 13 innings, contributing to the Mumbai Indians’ disappointing finish near the bottom of the league standings.

Agarkar acknowledged the challenges of this decision, stating, “It’s a tough one (to remove Suryakumar), having just won the World Cup, but as it happens after most World Cups, you try and reassess what your best way forward is. We thought this was the best way forward.” This shift in leadership signals the BCCI’s intent to rejuvenate the team’s dynamics ahead of crucial upcoming matches.

Upcoming Series and Asian Games Participation

Looking ahead, India is scheduled to face Ireland in two T20 internationals later this month, followed by a five-match series against England in July. These matches will serve as critical opportunities for the team to build momentum and assess their young talent, particularly with the inclusion of Sooryavanshi. Additionally, the BCCI has announced the squad for the men’s cricket competition at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, which is set to begin on September 24, with the final scheduled for October 3. The Asian Games squad features veteran bowler Jasprit Bumrah alongside Sooryavanshi, further showcasing the blend of experience and youth within the Indian cricket framework.

The T20I squad for the Ireland and England series includes: Shreyas Iyer (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma, Nitish Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Meanwhile, the Asian Games squad consists of Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Varma, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

As India prepares for these competitive fixtures, Sooryavanshi’s debut could not only be a monumental moment in his young career but also a significant chapter in the history of Indian cricket, potentially ushering in a new era of talent and leadership.
