Despite facing stiff competition from new releases, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ continues to lead the box office, while ‘The Odyssey’ has become Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has successfully retained its position at the top of the North American box office for the fourth consecutive weekend, bringing in an estimated $39 million from 4,006 theaters across the U.S. and Canada. The film’s enduring popularity has allowed it to accumulate over $854.9 million in domestic earnings, positioning it to soon surpass ‘Avengers: Endgame’ as the second highest-grossing domestic release, trailing only ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ which currently holds the record at $936.7 million.
In parallel, ‘The Odyssey,’ directed by Christopher Nolan, has shattered records, emerging as both the highest-grossing film of Nolan’s career and the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, overtaking the previous record held by ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ The film generated $19.5 million during its sixth weekend in North America, bringing its domestic total to just under $539.1 million. Internationally, it amassed an impressive $68 million, primarily from markets in China and Korea, resulting in a worldwide gross of approximately $1.4 billion.
Competition from New Releases
Meanwhile, the weekend’s box office landscape featured a variety of new releases. ‘Insidious: Out of the Further,’ the sixth installment in the horror franchise produced by Blumhouse Atomic Monster, secured the second position with $25.3 million from 3,303 theaters. This release marks a significant entry in the series, backed by an $18 million production budget, making it the most expensive film of the franchise to date.
In sixth place, ‘Mutiny,’ featuring Jason Statham as a man wrongfully accused of murder, opened with $7.5 million from 2,703 locations. The film faced challenges as it was briefly made available for free on Prime Video ahead of its theatrical release, which may have affected its box office performance. Additionally, the film received predominantly negative reviews, further hindering its commercial success.
Other newcomers had more modest debuts. ‘Spa Weekend,’ a comedy featuring Isla Fisher and Leslie Mann, earned an estimated $3.1 million from 2,009 theaters. Notably, this film appealed predominantly to female audiences, who represented approximately 84% of its opening weekend ticket buyers, as reported by PostTrak. In comparison, the 25th anniversary re-release of ‘The Fast and the Furious’ also garnered $3.1 million, illustrating the competitive nature of the box office during this period.
‘The Magic Faraway Tree,’ starring Andrew Garfield, opened outside the top ten with earnings of $1.4 million from 1,611 screens. In contrast, the documentary ‘Tony,’ centered on the young Anthony Bourdain, continued to perform well, bringing in $5 million from 1,652 screens.
Summer Box Office Performance
This summer season, which runs through Labor Day, has generated an estimated total of $4.4 billion in ticket sales across North America, ranking among the top four highest-grossing summers in history. Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends for Rentrak, expressed optimism about the current state of the box office, stating, ‘We’re in the home stretch of what I think will go down in box office history as maybe one of the most key and pivotal summer movie seasons ever. I don’t know how you can replicate this summer. Studios will try.’
Michael O’Leary, president and CEO of the movie theater trade organization Cinema United, attributed the robust summer box office to the diverse range of films available, a trend that has been bolstered by the industry’s gradual recovery from the disruptions caused by the Hollywood strikes earlier in 2023. ‘The thing that I’m most excited about, frankly, is just the enthusiasm of moviegoers. You feel it when you go to the theater. There’s an energy about being in the theater that hasn’t been there in the recent past,’ O’Leary remarked.

Overall, the year has seen the North American box office surpass $7 billion, reflecting a 20.4% increase compared to 2025, although it remains about 7.1% behind the figures recorded in 2019.
