England opened with a statement victory, Colombia impressed, Ghana edged Panama, while Portugal suffered an early setback after being held by DR Congo.
The FIFA World Cup produced another day of drama on Wednesday as England began their campaign with an entertaining victory over Croatia, Colombia overcame Uzbekistan, Ghana edged Panama, and Portugal were held to a surprise draw by the Democratic Republic of Congo.
England made a strong start to their Group L campaign with a 4-2 victory over Croatia, powered by a brace from captain Harry Kane. The Three Lions looked sharp in attack and controlled large portions of the contest, although Croatia’s resilience ensured the match remained competitive until the closing stages.
Kane’s two-goal performance underlined England’s ambitions of making a deep run in the tournament, with manager Gareth Southgate’s side showcasing both attacking flair and depth. The win places England in an early commanding position in Group L.
In the same group, Ghana secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama. The African side relied on a disciplined defensive display and a decisive goal to claim all three points in a tightly contested encounter.
Group K saw one of the day’s biggest surprises as Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw by the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite entering the match as favourites, Portugal struggled to break down a determined Congolese side that matched them throughout the contest.
The result leaves Group K wide open, with Portugal dropping valuable points in their opening fixture and Congo earning a significant result against one of Europe’s traditional football powers.
Meanwhile, Colombia began their World Cup campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan in Group L. The South Americans showed their attacking quality throughout the match, controlling possession and creating the better chances against a spirited Uzbek side making only its second appearance at the tournament.
Although Uzbekistan managed to get on the scoresheet, Colombia’s superior finishing proved decisive as they secured an important opening win.
With the group stage gathering momentum, early contenders are beginning to emerge while several favorites have already discovered that there are no easy matches at football’s biggest tournament.
