The Transportation Security Administration has launched a limited-time promotion offering a $20 discount on TSA PreCheck memberships for first-time applicants aged 30 and under, coinciding with the upcoming summer travel season.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has announced a new initiative called “$20 Take Off,” aimed at encouraging young travelers to enroll in its TSA PreCheck program by providing a $20 discount on the standard five-year membership fee. This promotion is available to first-time applicants aged 30 and under and runs until May 31. Depending on the enrollment provider chosen, the discounted rate can lower the membership cost to as little as $57.

This initiative comes at a pivotal moment as the travel industry anticipates a surge in airport traffic during the summer months. In 2025, TSA reported an unprecedented screening total of over 904 million passengers, marking the highest annual figure in the agency’s history. With airlines increasing flight schedules ahead of significant events, such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup, travelers this summer are likely to encounter particularly heavy crowds at airports across the country.

Promotion Details and Eligibility

The “$20 Take Off” promotion is only applicable to new enrollments completed by the May 31 deadline. Interested individuals can apply through any of the three TSA-authorized enrollment providers: CLEAR, IDEMIA, and Telos Corporation. To qualify for the discount, applicants must complete both an online application and an in-person interview prior to the deadline.

Denyse Wells, the TSA PreCheck program manager, emphasized the program’s goal of attracting younger travelers, stating, “We realized that young travelers are underrepresented in the TSA PreCheck population.” Wells elaborated that the TSA aims to provide a more accessible path for younger travelers who are beginning to embark on their travel journeys. This effort aligns with a broader strategy to diversify the demographic profile of TSA PreCheck enrollees.

Shifts in Marketing Strategy

Since its national launch in 2013, TSA PreCheck has primarily targeted frequent business travelers willing to pay for expedited airport security. However, as the landscape of air travel evolves, so too has the perception of expedited screening. Once considered a luxury service, expedited screening is increasingly viewed as a necessity in today’s travel environment, where security lines can be unpredictable and lengthy.

With a growing emphasis on experiences—especially among younger generations such as Generation Z—the TSA is adjusting its marketing strategies to reflect the evolving travel preferences of this demographic. Wells noted, “Gen Z tends to place value on experiences, which largely includes travel.” By attracting younger travelers to TSA PreCheck, the agency not only enhances their individual travel experiences but also improves overall security efficiency at checkpoints.

Enrollment Statistics and Benefits

Currently, over 24.6 million travelers are enrolled in TSA PreCheck, representing roughly 34% of all air travelers in the United States. The program provides numerous benefits, including access to dedicated security lanes and exemptions from standard security procedures, such as the removal of light jackets, belts, travel-sized liquids, laptops, and other electronics during screening. According to TSA data, 99% of PreCheck passengers wait less than 10 minutes at checkpoints nationwide, underscoring the program’s effectiveness in reducing wait times.

However, the increasing number of enrollees has also resulted in occasional congestion in PreCheck lanes, particularly at major airports such as Denver International Airport, Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and Chicago O’Hare International Airport during peak morning departure periods. This congestion highlights the need for ongoing evaluation of the program as it grows.

Application Process and Accessibility

The TSA PreCheck enrollment process requires travelers to complete an online application, undergo a background check, and attend an in-person appointment for fingerprinting and identity verification. Most applicants receive approval within three to five days, allowing them to obtain a Known Traveler Number (KTN), which can be used when booking airline tickets to access TSA PreCheck benefits.

Implications for the Future of Air Travel

The TSA’s promotional efforts represent a significant step toward improving the accessibility and convenience of air travel for younger generations. As travel preferences continue to evolve, the agency’s initiatives reflect a growing acknowledgment of the importance of accommodating diverse traveler needs. By incentivizing younger travelers to enroll in TSA PreCheck, the TSA aims to enhance individual travel experiences while simultaneously bolstering overall security efficiency at airports.

This strategic approach may foster greater loyalty among younger travelers, who are increasingly prioritizing travel experiences. By making TSA PreCheck more accessible, the agency hopes to engage a demographic that is becoming increasingly integral to the travel market.

As the summer travel season approaches, the success of the “$20 Take Off” promotion will likely be closely monitored by industry analysts, as it may set a precedent for future initiatives aimed at attracting diverse groups of travelers to the TSA PreCheck program and addressing the ongoing challenges of airport congestion and security wait times.
