The ASARP summit brought together real estate professionals, regulators, and industry leaders to examine how ethics, technology, and innovation are reshaping the profession while emphasizing that integrity and client-first service remain at the core of successful real estate practice.

Nearly 200 real estate professionals, brokers, investors, and industry leaders gathered on May 29, 2026, for the Association of South Asian Real Estate Professionals (ASARP)’s signature program, “Legal, Ethical & Professional Landscape in Real Estate,” held at the O’Hare Lake Office Park in Des Plaines, Illinois. The event focused on the rapidly evolving real estate industry, with discussions centered on legal developments, ethics, technology, regulatory changes, and opportunities for South Asian professionals.

The program featured presentations from industry and regulatory leaders, including Rebecca Jensen, John Gormley, and Laurie Murphy, alongside networking opportunities and a community dinner.

Opening the event, senior community leader Pradeep B. Shukla reflected on the importance of embracing change while remaining grounded in professional values. Drawing comparisons between historical resistance to innovations such as railroads, iron ships, and airplanes and today’s technological changes in real estate, he encouraged attendees to view adaptation as an opportunity rather than a challenge.

The keynote presentation was delivered by Rebecca Jensen, President and CEO of Midwest Real Estate Data LLC (MRED), who discussed the evolving role of Multiple Listing Services (MLS) and the growing importance of technology in the real estate industry.

Addressing the industry’s Private Listing Network, Jensen described it as a practical solution for homeowners facing sensitive personal situations such as divorce, medical issues, construction delays, or privacy concerns.

“Every seller deserves equal treatment regardless of their brokerage,” Jensen said while discussing the organization’s legal dispute with Zillow, describing MRED’s position as one focused on fairness and equal access.

She also highlighted MRED’s international listing capabilities, noting that they create new opportunities for real estate professionals serving clients with global interests, including those connected to India and South Asia.

John Gormley, CEO of Mainstreet REALTORS®, outlined several initiatives designed to support members, including new health insurance options for independent contractors and preparations for an evolving “Open MLS” environment. He encouraged professionals to remain actively involved in shaping the future of the industry through committee participation and collaborative leadership.

Regulatory updates were provided by Laurie Murphy, Director of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) Division of Real Estate, who discussed the transition to Illinois’ modernized licensing system, upcoming renewal deadlines, and proposed changes affecting written brokerage agreements.

Murphy emphasized that regardless of changes in technology or business models, the profession’s ethical obligations remain unchanged.

“Acting in the client’s best interest” remains the foundation of the Illinois Real Estate License Act, Murphy said, encouraging ethical professionals to report misconduct and reinforcing that regulation exists to protect the public.

Throughout the program, speakers repeatedly returned to themes of ethics, innovation, professionalism, and community leadership as the real estate industry adapts to new technologies and changing consumer expectations.
