Singapore Airlines was awarded the title of the world’s best airline for 2026 during the annual Skytrax Awards ceremony held in London, marking its sixth win in the awards’ history.
LONDON — Singapore Airlines has been named the world’s best airline for 2026 during the annual Skytrax Awards, a prestigious recognition often referred to as the aviation industry’s equivalent of the Oscars. The award was presented at a ceremony held on Friday at the Langham Hotel in London, attended by prominent airline executives and industry stakeholders.
This marks the sixth time Singapore Airlines has received the top honor in the awards’ 25-year history, having previously won in 2023, 2018, and multiple times in the 1990s. The airline reclaimed the title from Qatar Airways, which had won the award nine times in the past 15 years. Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted noted that the award has predominantly rotated among a select group of seven elite airlines, most of which also featured prominently in this year’s top rankings.
Competition Among Leading Airlines
In the final rankings for 2026, Qatar Airways secured the second position, followed by Cathay Pacific Airways, Japan’s All Nippon Airways, Turkish Airlines, and Emirates, rounding out the top six. Notably, British Airways was absent from this year’s list, while U.S. airlines continued to be underrepresented, with Air Canada being the sole North American carrier to make the cut.
“This award is a testament to the dedication and professionalism of our people,” said Goh Choon Phong, CEO of Singapore Airlines, in a pre-prepared statement. At the event, many flight crews from Singapore Airlines were present in full uniform, celebrating their achievement and performing dance routines that added a vibrant atmosphere to the occasion.
In addition to the top award, Singapore Airlines also received accolades for its economy class and economy class catering, further highlighting the airline’s commitment to enhancing passenger experience. The awards are based on a global customer satisfaction survey conducted by Skytrax, a UK-based aviation consultancy.
Recognizing Excellence in Various Categories
Qatar Airways was recognized as the best carrier in the Middle East and also won awards for its business class services, onboard Wi-Fi, and business-class lounge. Meanwhile, Cathay Pacific earned recognition for its cabin crew and first-class airline lounge, showcasing the competitive nature of the industry.
Despite the celebratory atmosphere, industry leaders acknowledged the ongoing challenges facing the aviation sector, including geopolitical tensions, rising oil prices, and operational disruptions. The event’s emcee humorously acknowledged these challenges when announcing that one award was presented early to accommodate a recipient racing to catch a flight.
Skytrax’s Plaisted commented on the industry’s resilience, noting that despite the past year being difficult, the quality of service provided by airlines continues to improve. “The passenger experience, mainly driven by the industry’s increasingly fierce competition, is always getting better,” he stated. “It takes a big event — a 9/11 event — to really cause a problem.”
Emerging Players and Global Recognition
Among the notable winners, the emerging Taiwanese carrier STARLUX achieved recognition by ascending to Skytrax’s five-star rating category, also earning the title for the cleanest cabin, which holds significant importance in the post-COVID-19 travel landscape. Air France garnered the award for best first class, while EVA Air, another Taiwanese airline, was recognized for its premium economy service.
The top five budget airlines recognized this year included AirAsia, Scoot, Vueling, Eurowings, and Iberia Express. Bangkok Airways was named the best airline in Asia and the best regional airline globally, while Ethiopian Airlines took home the title for the best airline in Africa. Chilean multinational carrier LATAM led in South America, and Turkish Airlines was recognized as the best in Europe. Air Canada emerged as the top airline in North America, also securing the award for best business class lounge dining.
Strategic Focus on Premium Travel
Mark Nasr, Air Canada’s executive vice president, emphasized the importance of the Skytrax awards amid the airline’s efforts to expand its global presence beyond traditional routes. “The industry is getting more competitive,” he said, highlighting a trend toward premium travel. “Airlines are investing to earn that business.” With rising fuel prices, airlines are increasingly focusing on premium offerings to sustain profitability.
Nasr expressed confidence in Air Canada’s ability to navigate the current economic challenges, citing a strong balance sheet, a loyal customer base, and dedicated staff. He addressed the political tensions between Canada and the United States, stating, “We believe in the core strength of the partnership — economic and social — between the US and Canada and we’ll weather the current circumstances.”
The 2026 Skytrax Awards illustrate the dynamic and competitive landscape of the airline industry, where customer satisfaction remains a crucial metric for success. As airlines continue to adapt to changing conditions and consumer preferences, recognition at such events plays an important role in shaping their reputations and future strategies.
