France captain Kylian Mbappé added another remarkable chapter to his FIFA World Cup career on Friday, July 10, 2026, becoming the youngest player to reach 20 World Cup appearances and the fastest to score 20 goals in the tournament’s history.

The 27-year-old reached both milestones during France’s 2-0 quarterfinal victory over Morocco at Boston Stadium, helping Les Bleus secure a place in their third FIFA World Cup semifinal.

Mbappé endured a frustrating first half after missing a penalty but responded in trademark fashion after the break. He opened the scoring in the 60th minute before providing the assist for Ousmane Dembélé’s second goal, sealing France’s progression to the last four.

With the goal, Mbappé now has 20 FIFA World Cup goals from just 20 appearances across the 2018, 2022 and 2026 tournaments. No player has reached the 20-goal mark in fewer matches.

The French forward now sits second on the tournament’s all-time scoring list with 20 goals, just one behind Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who holds the record with 21.

While Messi remains the all-time appearance leader with 30 World Cup matches, Mbappé has become France’s joint-most capped World Cup player with 20 appearances, drawing level with former goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and moving ahead of Antoine Griezmann, Olivier Giroud and Raphaël Varane.

The 2026 World Cup has also seen Mbappé continue climbing several other historic rankings.

His victory over Morocco was his 17th World Cup win, equalling former Germany striker Miroslav Klose on the all-time list. Only Messi, with 20 victories, has won more World Cup matches.

Mbappé has also strengthened his record as the competition’s most prolific knockout-stage goalscorer. Entering the tournament with eight goals in World Cup knockout matches, he surpassed Brazilian greats Leônidas and Ronaldo after scoring twice against Sweden in the Round of 16. Goals against Paraguay and Morocco have now taken his knockout tally to 12, extending his lead atop the all-time rankings.

Already France’s all-time leading international goalscorer, Mbappé continues to build one of the greatest World Cup careers in football history, with another opportunity to add to his record when France competes in the semifinals.
