Trumbull, CT: The Malayalee Association of Southern Connecticut (MASCONN) celebrated Onam 2026 with exceptional enthusiasm, cultural pride, and community participation, bringing together hundreds of Malayalees and friends from across Connecticut for a day filled with tradition, fellowship, and artistic excellence.
Held at Flood Middle School in Stratford, CT, the 18th annual Onam celebrations showcased the rich heritage of Kerala, while highlighting MASCONN’s continuing commitment to strengthening cultural identity among younger generations growing up in the United States. MASCONN’s tradition of organizing vibrant and inclusive Onam celebrations has made the organization one of the leading cultural platforms for Malayalees in Connecticut.
This year’s celebration held special significance as MASCONN was led by a dynamic team of women leaders whose vision, dedication, and organizational skills played a pivotal role in making the event a resounding success.
Under the leadership of President Jaya Giby, the Executive Committee included Vice President Reshmi Parakkal, Secretary Deepa Keloth, Joint Secretary Julie James, and, Treasurer Renjith S. Pillai,supported by Vice President Joe Kalarickal, Joint Treasurer Jobin George, the Board of Directors, volunteers, youth leaders, and community members. Their collective efforts reflected the spirit of service and unity that defines MASCONN.
The festivities began with a colorful welcome featuring a beautifully decorated Pookalam, traditional Kerala décor, and the ceremonial lighting of the Nilavilakku. Families dressed in traditional Kerala attire gathered in large numbers, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of Onam celebrations back home.
Jaya Giby, President of MASCONN, greeted the audience and emphasized the importance of preserving cultural traditions while fostering unity among Malayalee families living far from their homeland. She highlighted the several year-long initiatives by MASCONN under the women-led leadership of the 18 years old organization.
A major highlight of the event was the grand Maveli Procession, which captivated attendees of all ages. Accompanied by live Chenda mela artists, children, women dressed in kerala’s traditional attire and carrying flower petals, and community members, King Mahabali made a memorable entrance, symbolizing the annual visit of Kerala’s beloved legendary ruler. The procession was followed by Maveli’s traditional Onam message, one of the most anticipated moments of the celebration.
Addressing the gathering, Maveli reminded participants that the essence of Onam transcends celebration and lies in the values that unite humanity.
“The true spirit of Onam lies not in wealth or power, but in kindness, equality, and the joy of sharing with one another. As I visit my beloved people each year, I am proud to see that the values of unity, compassion, and friendship continue to thrive among Malayalees across the world. Let us work together to build a community where everyone feels welcome, respected, and valued.”
The message resonated deeply with the audience and served as a reminder of the timeless ideals associated with the legendary king’s golden era of peace, justice, and equality. The gathering responded with enthusiastic applause, reflecting the continuing relevance of these values in today’s world.
The event was honored by the presence of distinguished guests, including Connecticut State Senator Sujata Gadkar-Wilcox, who congratulated MASCONN for its dedication to community building and cultural preservation. In her remarks, Senator Gadkar-Wilcox praised the organization’s commitment to inclusivity and civic engagement.
“Organizations like MASCONN enrich Connecticut by preserving cultural traditions while building bridges across communities. It is inspiring to see so many families and young people celebrating their heritage with pride while contributing meaningfully to the diversity and strength of our state. I congratulate the MASCONN leadership, volunteers, and members for creating a vibrant and welcoming community.”
A spectacular Mega Thiruvathira, performed by 74 women from across Connecticut, set the tone for an afternoon of artistic excellence and cultural celebration. The graceful performance received tremendous appreciation from the audience and became one of the defining moments of the day.
The Mega Thiruvathira Performance was organized as a grand celebration of Kerala’s rich cultural heritage and traditions. Thiruvathira, also known as Thiruvathirakali, is one of Kerala’s most cherished traditional dance forms, predominantly performed by women in a circular formation accompanied by rhythmic songs.
The cultural segments of the day began with a prayer song and welcome remarks by Reshma and Divya Rajan, who eloquently emceed the event in both Malayalam and English.
The program featured a diverse lineup that included Mohiniyattom, classical dance, semi-classical dance, fusion dance, a piano instrument medley, Kids Naadan Dance, Malayalam, Hindi, and Tamil musical performances, Rhythm of MASCONN’s musical mashup, Retro Girls, Dazzler’s Vogue, Teen Boys Bollywood Dance, and Kantha by the Dancing Soul Ladies Group. Particularly noteworthy was the strong participation of women and children, reflecting the organization’s commitment to nurturing talent across generations.
The Dazzler’s Vogue by the Dazzling Girls of Trumbull showcased the beauty, rich culture, and traditions of Kerala, along with the warmth and openness that Keralites, who have always embraced towards people and cultures from across India.
The MASCONN Kids Club also played an important role in the celebrations. Young members introduced the activities of the Kids Club and delighted the audience with several performances, including the charmin “Aaranne Aaranne” presentation by the Little Stars of MASCONN. Their confidence and enthusiasm underscored the organization’s success in engaging the next generation in cultural and community activities.
Representatives from national Malayalam organizations, including FOMAA and FOKANA, conveyed greetings and extended their appreciation for MASCONN’s contributions to the broader Malayalee community in North America. Sponsors and supporters were also recognized for their generous contributions, which helped make the event possible.
No Onam celebration would be complete without the traditional Onasadya, and participants eagerly gathered to enjoy the elaborate feast served in authentic Kerala style. The grand meal, featuring a variety of traditional dishes and desserts, provided an opportunity for families and friends to reconnect and celebrate the spirit of Onam together.
As the event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Deepa Keloth, participants departed with cherished memories, renewed friendships, and a deep sense of pride in their shared cultural heritage. “The event served as way of promoting cultural awareness, preserve traditional art forms, and bring the community together through a vibrant display of unity and artistic/cultural excellence,” Deepa Keloth said. MASCONN Onam 2026 stood as a shining example of community unity, cultural preservation, and volunteer leadership. Through its historic women-led leadership team, outstanding cultural programs, and strong community participation, MASCONN once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to keeping the traditions and values of Kerala alive for future generations in Connecticut and beyond.
