Dr. Krishna Chivukula, an alumnus of IIT Madras, has made a historic donation of ₹228 crore to his alma mater, coinciding with the successful IPO of his company Indo-MIM Pvt Ltd, marking a significant milestone in alumni philanthropy in India.

In a landmark event for Indian higher education, Dr. Krishna Chivukula, a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, donated 46.15 lakh shares of his company, Indo-MIM Pvt Ltd, valued at approximately ₹228 crore, to the institution that played a crucial role in shaping his career. This donation, made on February 1, 2024, stands as the largest alumni contribution in IIT Madras’s history and the third-largest ever made to an Indian educational institution. Following this unprecedented donation, the shares were sold during the company’s initial public offering (IPO) on July 30, 2024, generating nearly ₹112 crore for the university through an Offer for Sale (OFS), an amount believed to be the largest cash distribution received by any Indian university via an IPO.

Dr. Chivukula’s Entrepreneurial Journey

Dr. Chivukula graduated with an MTech in Aerospace Engineering from IIT Madras in 1970. After completing his education, he embarked on a dynamic entrepreneurial career marked by significant milestones. At the age of 37, he made a pivotal decision to resign from his role as CEO of the Hoffman Group, which was then valued at over USD 400 million, to pursue business ventures of his own. He invested his entire savings, approximately USD 2 million, to establish Shiva Technologies, a company that was later acquired by EAG Laboratories in 2007 for a reported sum exceeding USD 100 million.

In 1996, Dr. Chivukula founded Indo-MIM as a joint venture, eventually acquiring full ownership. Over the ensuing three decades, Indo-MIM evolved into a leading manufacturer of precision engineering components utilizing Metal Injection Moulding (MIM) technology. As of the fiscal year 2026, the company reported a total income of ₹4,320.7 crore and a profit after tax of ₹533.5 crore, showcasing its robust global presence and financial performance across various sectors, including automotive, aerospace, defense, medical devices, and consumer goods.

The Impact of the Donation

Dr. Chivukula’s donation has had a profound impact on IIT Madras, enabling the institution to surpass ₹500 crore in grants for the first time during fiscal year 2024. This financial boost has significantly enhanced the university’s capacity for research, innovation, and academic programs. In recognition of his contributions, on August 6, 2024, IIT Madras honored Dr. Chivukula by naming a campus block after him.

The IPO of Indo-MIM, which raised ₹3,811 crore, attracted substantial investor interest, leading to an overall subscription rate of 98.47 times. Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs) demonstrated strong confidence in the company, subscribing nearly 296 times. When shares debuted on the stock exchanges, they opened at approximately ₹703 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and ₹700 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), marking a significant 45% increase over the IPO price of ₹485 per share. This successful launch has not only elevated Indo-MIM’s market stature but has also turned Dr. Chivukula’s donation into one of the most significant examples of alumni philanthropy benefiting an Indian educational institution.

Philanthropy and Community Engagement

Dr. Chivukula’s contributions extend far beyond his alumni donation. He has a long history of charitable giving, regularly donating ₹3 lakh each month to Baptist Hospital and the Asha Foundation, alongside an annual contribution of ₹50 lakh to the Deenabandhu Trust in Mysore. His philanthropic endeavors reflect a belief that success should be leveraged to create opportunities for others, and they illustrate a growing trend among successful entrepreneurs in India who are increasingly giving back to their educational institutions.

Across the country, alumni contributions are becoming crucial for strengthening higher education institutions. Dr. Chivukula’s commitment to IIT Madras, alongside other notable alumni such as Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, underscores how successful entrepreneurs can play a pivotal role in enhancing research ecosystems and preparing future generations of innovators.

A Legacy of Education and Opportunity

For students and aspiring entrepreneurs alike, Dr. Krishna Chivukula’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that education is not merely a pathway to personal achievement but also the foundation for a lifelong relationship with one’s alma mater. His decision to leave a prestigious corporate role for entrepreneurship, his investment in building globally competitive businesses, and his subsequent reinvestment in IIT Madras highlight the notion that the true legacy of education lies in the opportunities it creates for future generations.

As IIT Madras continues to benefit from the proceeds of one of India’s most significant recent IPOs, Dr. Chivukula’s story exemplifies how alumni philanthropy can profoundly impact educational institutions and contribute to the development of a robust research and innovation landscape in India. This narrative not only showcases the success of an individual entrepreneur but also emphasizes the broader implications of alumni generosity in shaping the future of education in the country.
