Widely regarded as the largest Diwali celebration outside India, Diwali at Times Square has become a global symbol of cultural unity, bringing the traditions of the Festival of Lights to the crossroads of the world.
Diwali at Times Square, widely recognized as the largest Diwali celebration outside India, will return to the heart of New York City on October 24, 2026, bringing together thousands of attendees for a day-long celebration of culture, music, dance, and community.
The festival, which has evolved into one of North America’s largest South Asian cultural showcases, will take place in the iconic Times Square district from 1:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Organizers say the event aims to celebrate the Festival of Lights while highlighting the cultural diversity and contributions of the Indian diaspora in the United States.
The 2026 program will feature “Colors of India,” a showcase of Indian and American traditions through music, dance, art, and cultural performances. The event will also include a Diya Lighting Ceremony, during which a ceremonial lamp will be illuminated alongside a countdown displayed on the iconic Times Square Tower.
The festivities will culminate in the “Light Up Times Square Concert,” featuring live performances by nationally and internationally recognized artists.
Over the years, Diwali at Times Square has attracted thousands of attendees and featured more than 2,000 national and international performers, making it one of the most prominent cultural events celebrating Indian heritage outside India.
The event’s growing significance has been recognized by public officials and institutions across the United States. In 2023, New York City officially proclaimed October 29 as “Diwali at Times Square Day.” The celebration has also been entered into the Congressional Record at Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., reflecting its cultural impact and growing national visibility.
Organizers noted that New York City has formally partnered with Diwali at Times Square since 2024, further strengthening the festival’s profile as a major multicultural event.
The festival has also generated substantial media attention. According to organizers, Diwali at Times Square has reached more than 600 million potential viewers and impressions through television, print, and online coverage.
In another sign of its growing prominence, Diwali at Times Square has been officially labeled on Google Maps, making it a recognized cultural landmark and destination for visitors from around the world.
As preparations continue for the 2026 edition, organizers say the event remains committed to promoting cultural unity, celebrating diversity, and creating a global platform where communities can come together through the shared spirit of Diwali.
