Digi Yatra has initiated international trials of its digital identity verification system at seven major airports, enhancing travel for eligible passengers on select Air India and IndiGo flights while emphasizing security and efficiency.

Digi Yatra, an innovative digital identity initiative spearheaded by the Indian government, has commenced international passenger trials at seven prominent airports across the country. The trials, which began on October 30, 2023, will extend until December 2026. This expansion is designed to enable eligible Indian nationals to utilize a face-recognition system for select international flights operated by Air India and IndiGo, representing a significant step in the digital transformation of air travel in India.

The airports involved in this trial are Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, Cochin International Airport, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, Chennai International Airport, and Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar. This marks the first considerable extension of the Digi Yatra platform beyond domestic flights, which previously facilitated smoother travel experiences for millions of Indian travelers.

Trial Implementation and Passenger Eligibility

According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, participation in this international trial phase is limited to Indian nationals who possess e-passports. To utilize the Digi Yatra system, passengers must first create a Verifiable Credential (VC) on the Digi Yatra mobile application. This process entails scanning the Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) of their e-passport and reading the embedded chip using the Near Field Communication (NFC) feature available on compatible smartphones. After taking a selfie for identity verification, the credential is securely stored in the Digi Yatra wallet on the passenger’s device.

Once registered, passengers can upload their boarding passes onto the app, enabling a more efficient entry process into the airport terminal. Following the initial document checks at the airline check-in counter, travelers can navigate through security and boarding gates using facial authentication technology. This innovation aims to reduce wait times and improve the overall travel experience for passengers, which has been a growing concern in the aviation industry.

Enhancing Security and Efficiency

The Digi Yatra platform has shown considerable success within India’s domestic travel sector, boasting over 26.5 million users and facilitating more than 110 million journeys across 39 domestic airports, as reported by the Ministry. Plans are in motion to further expand Digi Yatra’s reach to an additional 25 airports by 2027. Suresh Khadakbhavi, CEO of the Digi Yatra Foundation, underscored the platform’s ability to simplify domestic air travel and highlighted the importance of ensuring interoperability with global frameworks, such as the International Air Transport Association (IATA)’s One ID and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)’s Public Key Directory.

Neetan Chopra, IndiGo’s Chief Digital and Information Officer, expressed optimism regarding the project, stating that the integration of secure digital identity and biometric technologies into international departures signifies a substantial advancement for the Indian aviation sector. As part of this broader trial initiative, IndiGo’s beta phase for the Digi Yatra system commenced at the end of October.

Complementing Existing Travel Processes

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has clarified that the Digi Yatra system is intended to enhance, rather than replace, existing travel processes. Passengers will still be required to carry their physical travel documents and fulfill all necessary checks, including airline document verifications and immigration procedures. The Ministry emphasized that while Digi Yatra aims to optimize efficiency and bolster security, traditional checks remain crucial to ensuring comprehensive compliance with travel regulations.

Future Outlook and Feedback Mechanism

Feedback collected during this trial phase will play a pivotal role in shaping the wider rollout of the Digi Yatra platform in 2027. This initiative aligns with a broader trend towards digitization within the aviation sector, focusing on improving passenger experiences through technology while maintaining rigorous standards of security and privacy. Stakeholders across the aviation industry are expected to closely monitor the system’s effectiveness and passenger acceptance as the trials progress.

In conclusion, the Digi Yatra initiative represents a significant advancement in modernizing air travel in India. By harnessing biometric technology and digital identity verification, this program aspires to create a smoother, more efficient travel experience for international passengers while ensuring adherence to necessary security protocols. As the trials continue, this initiative may pave the way for a wider adoption of digital identity solutions in the aviation sector, highlighting India’s commitment to enhancing its travel infrastructure and aligning with global standards.

The successful implementation of Digi Yatra could not only improve the passenger experience but also set a precedent for similar initiatives in the region, potentially influencing neighboring countries to adopt advanced technologies for air travel. As the aviation sector continues to evolve, the importance of integrating technology to streamline operations and enhance security will remain paramount.
