Chennai’s latest film, ‘Dorothy’, has been hailed by LGBTQIA+ activists as a significant cultural milestone, presenting nuanced representations of trans lives and relationships, while also highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the community.

CHENNAI, India — The recent release of ‘Dorothy’, a film by Tamil director Karthik Subbaraj, has sparked a wave of enthusiasm and reflection within the LGBTQIA+ community. Released in theaters on September 25, 2023, ‘Dorothy’ tells the poignant story of a trans woman navigating her identity and finding love, a narrative that many activists and community members feel has long been absent from Tamil cinema.

Jaya, a trans activist and general manager of Sahodaran, a local NGO dedicated to uplifting LGBTQIA+ individuals, expressed her excitement, stating, “This does not feel like a step up; it feels like having stepped on an escalator.” This sentiment echoes the views of many who believe that ‘Dorothy’ represents a breakthrough in the representation of trans lives on screen.

Positive Reception and Community Impact

The film has received acclaim not only from LGBTQIA+ audiences but also from mainstream viewers. Actor and author Negha Shahin noted, “We finally got a film that takes a deep look into trans life. It surprised me to see how even cisgender heteronormative people connected to the film.” The emotional resonance of ‘Dorothy’ is highlighted by Marakkah, a teacher and poet, who shared her personal connection to the film: “All my old memories came back to me. I couldn’t stop crying during the last 30 minutes.”

Malini Jeevarathnam, an actor-filmmaker and activist, praised the film for its authenticity. “It’s a raw, real story about what happens next door in our towns. What I liked was how they didn’t compromise on authenticity for aesthetic quality,” they remarked. This emphasis on an authentic portrayal of trans experiences is seen as critical in a society where such narratives are often marginalized.

Addressing Social Issues

One of the film’s strengths is its exploration of serious social issues, including the prevalence of honor killings targeting trans individuals. Marakkah noted, “We have seen honor killings due to caste and religion, and we are, in fact, a society that killed female infants. But Karthik has exposed something people don’t wish to speak about.” This aspect resonates deeply with those who have experienced violence or discrimination due to their gender identity.

Negha Shahin, who has personally encountered family violence, added, “I found that aspect of Dorothy to be very valid.” The film’s exploration of gender dysphoria, a topic rarely addressed in Tamil cinema, has been particularly impactful. Jaya commented on this, stating, “Most trans women, like myself, used to indulge in feminine activities secretly to feel euphoric. But some suppress those feelings due to fear and follow the stereotypes that their parents have taught them.” This theme of gender euphoria post-transition has struck a chord with many viewers.

Musical Milestones and Cultural Shifts

The film’s music, composed by the renowned maestro Ilaiyaraaja, has also been celebrated. Negha Shahin remarked, “Many songs have humiliated our lives, but there hadn’t been a song that expressed our feelings well until ‘Muthumani,’ which Raaja sir himself has written.” Marakkah reflected on the evolution of Tamil cinema, stating, “After more than 40 years, Tamil cinema has moved to the next phase, I believe.”

Despite the positive reception, the film has not been without controversy. Some members of the community have pointed out the ongoing queerphobia that persists in society, particularly in light of the film’s representation of a kiss between a cisgender man and a trans woman. Negha expressed concern, saying, “They are saying that it features two men kissing, which is very transphobic.” Jaya echoed this frustration, questioning the societal tendency to conflate trans identity with homosexuality.

Challenges Ahead

As the community celebrates the success of ‘Dorothy’, activists remain aware of the challenges that lie ahead. Negha noted that even today, trans individuals often face harassment in public spaces, which can deter them from experiencing films like ‘Dorothy’ in theaters. “Even today, there’s eve-teasing and a nasty gaze towards us,” she stated. Marakkah emphasized the need for societal change, saying, “I always believe that the day someone walking on the road sees and passes by us just like another human being on the street, we will know that society has changed.”

Looking to the future, members of the LGBTQIA+ community expressed a desire for more films that portray the joy and success of trans lives, rather than focusing solely on struggle. Jaya articulated this hope, stating, “We would love to see a film about a trans woman who achieved a lot, about someone whose parents support her and help her achieve her goals.”

Critical Perspectives on Representation

While many in the community are celebrating ‘Dorothy’, some are also voicing critiques. Negha suggested that the filmmakers could have included disclaimers to discourage the use of harmful language featured in the film. “It’s very hurtful to hear those words. They put disclaimers for so many things; they can do it for this too,” she remarked. Malini added that while criticism is valid, it is essential to recognize the broader context of representation in Tamil cinema, which has historically marginalized LGBTQIA+ narratives.

As the conversation around ‘Dorothy’ continues, the film is seen as a pivotal moment for LGBTQIA+ representation in Tamil cinema. The collective hope among community members is that this film will pave the way for more inclusive storytelling in the future, ultimately contributing to a more accepting society.
