In a related post on the social media platform X, Anthropic’s lead researcher Evan Hubinger estimated a more than 10% chance that AI could pose an existential threat to humanity within the next decade. These statements have ignited widespread debate about the implications of superintelligence, including its potential impact on employment, national security, and the very fabric of society.

Superintelligence is defined as artificial intelligence that can significantly outperform humans on virtually all cognitive tasks. This definition was underscored in a petition by the Future of Life Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing global existential risks, which has garnered signatures from prominent figures in the field, including Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as the “Godfather of AI.” Hinton’s involvement highlights the seriousness of the concerns being raised.

Max Tegmark, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) specializing in AI research, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “Imagine, for example, some AI or massive cluster of AIs that together are smarter than all of humanity together, than all 8 billion of us. That would certainly count.” The prospect of such an intelligence raises ethical and operational questions about who would control these capabilities and how they might be used.

Good introduced the idea of an “ultraintelligent machine” capable of surpassing human intellectual activities. For instance, Devin Kim, president of the Center for AI Safety and a former employee at xAI, articulated concerns about the rapid progression of AI development. He noted that companies are pursuing models capable of automating their own research, leading to a potential recursive self-improvement scenario where AI could exponentially increase its own intelligence. This, he warned, could heighten the risks of catastrophic outcomes, such as pandemics or cyberattacks.

Daniel Kokotajlo, a former OpenAI researcher now leading the AI Futures Project, stated, “They can’t even align or control their AIs today, and the AIs of the future will be much smarter and harder to understand.” He stressed that failing to regulate the development of superintelligent AI could result in the most significant concentration of power in human history, potentially creating a new class of superintelligences that operate under the direction of a small elite.

Tegmark added to this sentiment, stating, “If we just allow a completely unfettered race to build billions of superintelligent robots, then I think the probability is way above 50% that we’re going to lose control of this in the next few decades.” This echoes the sentiments of many in the field who worry that the current pace of AI development outstrips our ability to manage its consequences.

The timeline for the emergence of superintelligent AI is a contentious topic among researchers. The AI Futures Project has projected that superintelligent technology could manifest within the next 1 to 10 years. In contrast, some experts argue that we may be decades away from achieving such capabilities. Melanie Mitchell, a professor at the Santa Fe Institute, noted that current AI systems are not yet close to matching human intelligence comprehensively. Darrell West, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, echoed this, emphasizing that while AI is improving, humans still maintain an advantage in multifaceted skills.

Despite differing opinions on the timeline, there is consensus that a key breakthrough will involve AI’s ability to learn and improve independently without human input. West remarked, “AI that can learn independently and then act on that new knowledge — that’s what people should be paying attention to.”

While there are significant concerns regarding superintelligent AI, experts also acknowledge the potential benefits. Mitchell highlighted that advancements in AI have already led to breakthroughs in various fields, including drug design and climate modeling. In response to these concerns, some lawmakers are taking action. Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Greg Casar have announced plans to introduce the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act, expressing worries about the current trajectory of AI development. Sanders stated, “The leaders of the major AI companies publicly acknowledge that they do not fully understand the technology and that it is escaping their control. It is irresponsible for society to allow them to move forward and make these products even more advanced.”

The ongoing discussions about superintelligent AI underscore the urgent need for comprehensive frameworks to guide its development and safeguard humanity from potential risks.
