The ALIGN Health Initiative (AHI) Pledge Signing Event, held on June 17, 2026, marked a pivotal milestone in advancing collaborative, community-centered healthcare innovation. Bringing together leading physician organizations, academic institutions, and community partners, the event formalized a unified commitment to preventive health education, workforce engagement, and scalable models for sustainable community impact. Through a structured, leadership-driven dialogue, the gathering reinforced the growing importance of cross-sector partnerships in addressing complex public health challenges. Central to this effort was the prominent leadership of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) and the Global Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (GAPIO), whose participation underscored the expanding influence of physician-led, community-based healthcare initiatives.

AAPI Leadership at the Forefront
A defining feature of the event was the strong presence of AAPI, one of the largest physician networks in the United States. With thousands of members across specialties, AAPI continues to play a critical role in advancing public health advocacy, education, and service in diverse communities.
Representing AAPI, President Dr. Amit Chakrabarty emphasized the organization’s enduring commitment to prevention-focused care.
“Preventive health is not just a clinical priority—it is a societal responsibility. AAPI is proud to support initiatives like ALIGN that empower communities through education, early intervention, and culturally responsive care,” said Dr. Chakrabarty.
He highlighted the importance of addressing health disparities, particularly among immigrant and underserved populations.
“Our mission as physicians extends beyond treating illness—we must actively work to reduce disparities and ensure that every community has access to the knowledge and resources needed for healthier lives.”
The participation of AAPI member Dr. Raj Shah, who also chairs the Health Council at WHEELS Global Foundation, further reflected the organization’s deep engagement across multiple global and community health platforms, signaling a coordinated effort within the AAPI physician community to advance prevention-driven models of care.
Global Collaboration Through GAPIO
Complementing AAPI’s national leadership, GAPIO, led by President Dr. Sudhir Parikh, brought a global perspective through its international network spanning more than 40 countries.
GAPIO’s involvement highlighted the transnational impact of physicians of Indian origin and their ability to foster global knowledge exchange and program scalability.
Together, AAPI and GAPIO exemplify how diaspora physician organizations are strengthening the bridge between local healthcare innovation and global best practices.
Academic and Community Partnerships
Opening remarks were delivered by Michael Mahon, Vice President of Academic Affairs at The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education, who emphasized the critical role of academic institutions in mobilizing physician trainees and integrating education, service, and research.
At the heart of the initiative is Dr. Vriti Khurana, founder of the ALIGN Health Initiative, whose leadership reflects a new generation of physician-driven public health innovation.
ALIGN’s mission focuses on delivering school-based preventive health education addressing nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and mental well-being—key determinants of long-term health outcomes.
Dr. Chakrabarty reinforced AAPI’s alignment with this vision.
“Investing in children’s health through school-based education is one of the most impactful strategies we have to shape healthier generations. ALIGN represents exactly the kind of forward-thinking approach we must champion.”
Expressing his enthusiasm for the initiative, Dr. Chakrabarty said he was “totally amazed” by ALIGN’s work.
“We are going to highlight this at the AAPI Annual Convention in Tampa, Florida, in July this year,” he said. “You will have an amazing presence there. We’ve got ALIGN T-shirts also made.”
Strengthening Impact Through Strategic Partnerships
The WHEELS Global Foundation, led by President Ratan Agarwal, also played a significant role, contributing expertise in sustainable program development and cross-sector collaboration.
The partnership between WHEELS and AAPI reflects a growing trend of integrated healthcare models that combine clinical expertise with community engagement and philanthropy.
The pledge signing formally recognized founding partners and reaffirmed a shared commitment to advancing ALIGN’s goals.
This builds upon the initiative’s earlier national recognition at the White House on July 30, 2025, where ALIGN was highlighted as part of a broader effort to enhance healthcare interoperability and patient empowerment.
A Model for the Future
The ALIGN Health Initiative Pledge Signing represents a defining moment in the evolving role of AAPI healthcare leadership.
By leveraging extensive professional networks, cultural insight, and a shared commitment to service, AAPI and its partners are helping redefine preventive healthcare delivery.
As ALIGN moves forward, the continued engagement of AAPI stakeholders will be instrumental in ensuring that healthcare remains accessible, culturally responsive, and impactful for future generations.
Looking Ahead: From Commitment to Community Impact
The pledge signing event signaled a transition from strategic alignment to implementation.
Planned collaborations with school districts later in the year will bring ALIGN’s model directly into communities, addressing issues such as childhood obesity and promoting sustainable behavioral change.
AAPI leadership underscored the long-term importance of these efforts.
“Sustainable healthcare transformation begins at the community level,” said Dr. Chakrabarty. “By working together across organizations and sectors, we can create scalable solutions that truly make a difference in people’s lives.”
As the initiative expands, its leaders hope to establish a replicable model for preventive health education that can be adopted by communities across the United States and beyond.
