“Students must remain curious, embrace new technologies, seek mentors, and continuously develop new skills throughout their careers,” said Prof. Rajasekhar Vangapaty, emphasizing the importance of lifelong learning and adaptability in an evolving professional landscape.
GOPIO Manhattan, the Manhattan chapter of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin, hosted its “College and Beyond” panel discussion on June 7, 2026, at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in New York City, bringing together students, parents, educators, professionals, and community leaders for an afternoon of mentorship and career guidance.
The program was designed to help students and young professionals navigate higher education, career planning, internships, leadership development, networking, and emerging workplace trends. Organizers said the event drew strong participation from the community, providing attendees with practical insights into academic success and long-term professional growth.
The panel featured professionals from a range of fields, including technology, medicine, public policy, business, and education. Speakers included engineering leader Mihir Sanghavi, New York University student Brian Thomas, public servant and policy professional Shashank Shamshabad, medical student Vinisha Patel, and Hindi language educator Dr. Sonia Sharma.
The discussion was moderated by Prof. Rajasekhar Vangapaty, president of GOPIO Manhattan and a professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
The event opened with welcoming remarks from GOPIO Manhattan Vice President Vimal Goyle, followed by an overview of the organization’s mission of promoting education, leadership, professional networking, and community engagement.
Prof. Vangapaty encouraged students to prepare not only for college admissions but also for long-term personal and professional success.
“Students must remain curious, embrace new technologies, seek mentors, and continuously develop new skills throughout their careers,” he said.
Throughout the discussion, panelists shared personal experiences, career journeys, and lessons learned while addressing topics such as choosing academic majors, adapting to changing job markets, securing internships, developing leadership skills, and managing personal well-being.
Mihir Sanghavi emphasized the importance of discipline and persistence in achieving long-term success.

“Success is built on consistency, discipline, and perseverance,” he said, encouraging students to focus on continuous improvement rather than immediate results.
Brian Thomas highlighted the value of communication and relationship-building.
“Technical skills are important, but strong interpersonal skills often distinguish successful leaders and professionals,” he told attendees.
Drawing from his experience in public service and government, Shashank Shamshabad encouraged students to embrace challenges and learn from setbacks.
“Obstacles and failures are often valuable learning experiences that contribute to future success,” he said.
Vinisha Patel, a second-year medical student and student leader, discussed the importance of commitment and service in pursuing a medical career, while Dr. Sonia Sharma stressed the need to balance professional ambition with personal well-being.
“Prioritizing mental health and maintaining a healthy work-life balance are essential components of long-term success,” Sharma said.
One of the highlights of the event was an extended question-and-answer session, during which students and parents sought guidance on college admissions, career transitions, graduate education, workplace expectations, entrepreneurship, and internship opportunities.
The panelists collectively emphasized that success is not defined by a single degree, job title, or achievement but by resilience, adaptability, continuous learning, and meaningful relationships.
Attendees praised the program for providing practical advice and mentorship, with many students saying the discussion helped clarify their academic and career goals.
GOPIO Manhattan thanked the panelists, volunteers, sponsors, and community members who contributed to the event’s success and expressed appreciation to Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan for hosting the program.
The organization said it plans to continue offering educational workshops, mentorship initiatives, leadership forums, and professional development programs for students and young professionals.
