“It will become a modern-day Takshashila where Americans can explore Indian culture and heritage,” said Dr. Pujya Gnanvatsaldas Swami on the planned Indian heritage museum at Akshardham, New Jersey.

A major new museum dedicated to Indian history, culture and civilization is set to open at the BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham in New Jersey, offering visitors an immersive journey through more than 10,000 years of Indian heritage.

The announcement was highlighted by Dr. Pujya Gnanvatsaldas Swami during a leadership and philanthropy event held in Edison, New Jersey, on June 7.

According to details shared at the event, the museum will span more than 100,000 square feet and is expected to become the first institution of its kind in the Western Hemisphere dedicated to presenting the breadth of Indian civilization through large-scale exhibits, multimedia experiences and interactive displays.

The planned museum will feature 12 large architectural replicas, 40 multimedia presentations, 85 immersive dioramas and approximately 200 lifelike statues designed to bring key moments, personalities and achievements from Indian history to life.

Organisers say the project aims to introduce visitors to India’s cultural, philosophical, scientific and artistic traditions through modern exhibition techniques that combine storytelling with technology.

Speaking about the vision behind the project, Gnanvatsaldas Swami described the museum as a place where people from diverse backgrounds will be able to explore and better understand India’s civilisational legacy.

“It will become a modern-day Takshashila where Americans can explore Indian culture and heritage,” he said.

The museum is being developed within the Akshardham campus in Robbinsville, which is already recognized as one of the largest Hindu temple complexes outside India and has emerged as a major cultural and spiritual destination in North America.

The proposed institution is expected to serve both educational and cultural purposes, offering visitors insights into India’s contributions to philosophy, spirituality, science, literature, architecture and social thought across millennia.

Construction of the museum is currently underway, though an official opening date has not yet been announced.
