Veteran Batting Maestro Smashes 74 Off 51 Balls as Rain-Hit Opener Goes to Visitors
AUCKLAND — Virat Kohli turned back the clock with a dazzling display of controlled aggression on Wednesday, steering India to a comfortable five-wicket victory over New Zealand in a rain-interrupted first One-Day International at Eden Park.
On a lively, bouncy pitch where teammates and opponents alike struggled for fluency, the veteran right-hander put on a masterclass of pull and hook shots. Striking 13 boundaries and a towering maximum, Kohli raced to his 80th ODI fifty off just 35 deliveries, finishing with 74 runs from 51 balls before falling to Jacob Duffy.
The knock left New Zealand’s pace attack utterly flummoxed and gave India a 1-0 lead in the five-game series, just a day before Kohli celebrates his 38th birthday.
Early Breakthroughs and Seam Dominance
Earlier in the day, Indian captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to field following a brief morning shower. The decision paid immediate dividends as the visiting seamers exploited helpful conditions.
Arshdeep Singh led the charge with a lively spell, claiming 4-70 from his 10 overs, while Gurnoor Brar chipped in with 3-44. New Zealand’s innings never truly gained momentum. Opening changes were forced following a freak training collision on Tuesday that ruled out Devon Conway, handing Tim Seifert an unexpected start.
Seifert top-scored for the hosts with 38 before mistiming a pull shot to mid-on. Wickets tumbled at regular intervals until a blistering late cameo from last man Blair Tickner—who smashed 34 from just 23 balls—pushed New Zealand to a modest total of 185 all out in the 41st over.
