Dr. Sadasivan Sreemathy Lal, widely known as Dr. S. S. Lal, has been appointed Chairman of a High-Power Committee under the Health Ministry of the Government of Kerala.

The committee has been tasked with monitoring, evaluating and controlling contagious and infectious diseases, a responsibility considered vital to strengthening public health protection and disease surveillance across the state.

Speaking to reporters after chairing a review meeting, Health Minister K. Muraleedharan said, “World Health Organization (WHO) consultant Dr. S. S. Lal will be the chairperson of the panel.” 

Dr. Lal is a globally recognized public health professional whose career has been marked by significant contributions to disease control, health policy and public health advocacy. From humble beginnings in Kerala, he has built an international reputation through his work in public health and social service, becoming a respected voice in the field both in India and abroad.

Former president of the Indo-American Press Club, Dr. Lal is known for his longstanding commitment to improving healthcare systems and advancing public health initiatives. His work over the years has contributed to efforts aimed at addressing major health challenges and strengthening disease-prevention strategies.

The appointment has been welcomed by colleagues, community leaders and members of the Indo-American Press Club, who described it as recognition of his expertise, dedication and years of service in the public health sector.

Supporters noted that the committee’s work will play a critical role in safeguarding the health and well-being of people in Kerala, particularly through early detection, monitoring and control of infectious diseases.

“The participation of multiple sectors is essential for the effective control of infectious diseases,” the Health Department noted while announcing the formation of the committee.

Congratulating Dr. Lal on the appointment, well-wishers expressed confidence that his experience and leadership would help guide the committee in addressing emerging public health challenges and strengthening preventive healthcare measures in the state.
