This report examines how TikTok may be facilitating the normalization of the sex industry through content posted by popular performers on platforms like OnlyFans, raising concerns about its impact on young audiences.
TikTok is facing scrutiny following a report that claims the platform is contributing to the promotion and normalization of the sex industry, particularly among younger users. The findings suggest that so-called “sexfluencers” are using strategic content to market pornographic material available on sites like OnlyFans, potentially influencing impressionable audiences.
The study, conducted by the UK-based Centre to End All Sexual Exploitation (Cease) and Australia’s Collective Shout, analyzed a year’s worth of non-explicit TikTok content from some of OnlyFans’ most prominent young female creators. Researchers noted that these performers cleverly embedded references to adult content within ostensibly harmless lifestyle posts, which included themes such as shopping, pet care, baking, and skincare advice.
Content Strategies and Implications
Even though TikTok has explicit policies prohibiting direct links to OnlyFans or sexual solicitation, the report highlights that creators often resort to euphemisms, emojis, and suggestive gestures to indicate the availability of adult content on other platforms. For example, the word “corn” is frequently utilized as a coded reference to “porn,” accompanied by the corn emoji alongside a star emoji to bypass content restrictions.
The researchers observed that the algorithm-driven recommendations on TikTok further expose users to these subtle messages, creating what the report describes as a “TikTok to OnlyFans pipeline.” This pipeline appears to encourage young audiences to consider adult content as a viable and glamorous lifestyle choice. In many viral posts, OnlyFans creators openly boast about their financial success, emphasizing that selling sexual content can lead to a luxurious life filled with wealth and freedom.
Statements from performers often encapsulate the allure of OnlyFans, with phrases such as, “how it feels knowing I own all of this at 23 thanks to 250,000 men,” reflecting a narrative that positions adult work as a solution to financial struggles. The report notes that some creators frame their involvement with OnlyFans as a pathway out of poverty, promoting the platform as a means to attain luxury items previously unattainable.
Financial Data and Creator Earnings
While OnlyFans has reported that its top 5,000 creators have each earned over $1 million since the platform’s inception in 2016, the average earnings of the platform’s 5 million registered performers are significantly lower, estimated at around $1,000 per year. This disparity raises questions about the viability of the narratives presented by successful creators and the realities faced by the majority of performers.
Melinda Tankard Reist, of Collective Shout, criticized TikTok for its role in what she termed an “industrial-scale digital pimp funnelling girls into the sex industry.” She expressed concern that young women and girls are being targeted by a predatory industry that seeks to groom them for participation in producing explicit content.
The study was prompted by the growing influence of OnlyFans stars, such as Sophie Rain and Ari Kytsya, who have garnered substantial followings on TikTok, particularly among teenage girls. Rain’s rise to fame, for instance, was linked to her content filmed in the “Bop House,” a luxury production facility for adult content in Miami, where she and other women sell explicit material. Recruitment efforts for such houses are often showcased on TikTok, with aspiring performers posting sexually suggestive content to gain attention.
Brand Partnerships and Youth Marketing
The intersection of lifestyle branding and adult content is also notable, as many OnlyFans performers utilize TikTok to promote a range of products, from household goods to adult toys. For instance, Kytsya, who identifies as a “mattress actress,” was appointed as a brand ambassador for Urban Decay, a cosmetics line popular among younger demographics. Such partnerships raise further concerns regarding the normalization of adult content in spaces frequented by minors.
In response to the report, TikTok reiterated its commitment to enforcing community guidelines that prohibit sexual content. A spokesperson stated, “TikTok strictly prohibits the sharing or showing of sexual content and we use advanced technologies to enforce our community guidelines. In addition, our systems are designed to prevent age-inappropriate content from reaching teens.” Meanwhile, an OnlyFans representative emphasized that the platform is intended for users aged 18 and over, with measures in place to prevent minors from accessing content.
Future Considerations
The report’s authors advocate for an expansion of existing bans on explicit content directed at under-18s to include promotional material related to the sex industry. As the landscape of social media continues to evolve, the implications of this research could inform future discussions on the regulation of content aimed at young audiences and the responsibilities of platforms like TikTok in moderating such interactions.
