The shocking murder committed by a teenager in the capital city, along
with similar recurring reports, is enough to make any parent’s heart
race. Stabbing a teacher for an iPhone, forgetting one’s own blood
ties under the influence of drugs, and arrogantly boasting, “I am only
17, my father and my party will save me,” all point toward a grave
crisis confronting our society. It is a bitter truth that movies
glorifying crime, unrestricted social media usage, the easy
availability of drugs, and the overconfidence of escaping punishment
are leading our children astray.
However, this is not the time to despair and assume that our younger
generation is completely lost. Instead of giving in to fear, what
every family and society needs today is the confidence that we can
guide them back to life. By holding onto hope and making timely
interventions, we can overcome this crisis.
See Them Not as Criminals, But as Souls in Need of Guidance
Not a single child is born a criminal. It is the environment in which
they grow up, the sights they witness, and the misguided support they
receive that turn them into aggressors. Idolizing movie gangsters and
replicating the violence of mobile games in real life stem from the
immaturity of an impressionable age. Adults must be able to channel
their energy in the right direction during these formative years. Most
of the problems we see today can be resolved if parents and society
show the courage to correct them and lead them down the right path,
rather than standing by to justify their mistakes.
Let Homes Be Sanctuaries of Friendship
True parenting does not lie in providing children with the finest
food, expensive clothes, and all the money they ask for, but rather in
giving them our time. Parents must be able to know what happens beyond
the closed doors of their children’s rooms.
Instead of policing them, parents should become their best
friends—someone with whom they can talk openly about anything. Ask
about their friendships and understand their mental struggles. At the
same time, realize that love does not mean giving in to every stubborn
demand. Parents should not hesitate to correct them when they see a
mistake and say “no” where “no” is needed. Instead of the mindset that
“Dad will save me no matter what wrong I do,” we must give our
children the assurance that “If you make a mistake, you will have to
face the consequences, but Mom and Dad will stand by you to help you
correct it and come back.”
When Teachers and Society Join Hands
It is impossible to mold a good generation by tying the hands of
teachers. Parents must realize that when teachers discipline children,
it is for their own bright future. Alongside discipline, schools must
place greater emphasis on mental health and counseling.
Similarly, society must stand united against adults who drag minors
into quotation gangs, drug mafias, and political violence. Strong
awareness is needed so that children do not harbor the illusion that
they can escape crimes using loopholes in the law.
Guiding Them Toward Values and Spirituality
We need to bring children out of the loneliness of the digital world
and into genuine human relationships. Let us direct their attention
toward arts, sports, reading, and volunteering. Alongside this,
religious and social communities have a vital role to play in
nurturing spiritual and moral values in them.
Sunday schools, Vacation Bible School (VBS), youth camps, and prayer
fellowships are all wonderful platforms that help cultivate
compassion, reverence for God, and discipline in children. Just as Job
prayed for his children, we must be able to hold our children close,
pray for them, and lead them along the paths of goodness.
It is always better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. Our
children are not lost to us; they are waiting for our care and
correction. Setting aside blame, let us embrace them with hands of
love, discipline, and prayer. Together, let us build a safe tomorrow
rooted in strong values.
