The Congress-led INDIA bloc plans to escalate its campaign against the Election Commission and the central government with a public impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, scheduled for Friday, followed by a rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Sunday.

The Congress-led coalition known as the INDIA bloc is poised to intensify its criticism of the Election Commission and the central government with a planned ‘public impeachment’ of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. This event is set for Friday at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, ahead of a major rally at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on Sunday.

Authorities have denied permission for the public impeachment to take place at Ramlila Maidan, prompting the opposition leaders to relocate the event to Kharge’s home at 10, Rajaji Marg. This weekend’s activities come on the heels of two weeks of relative quiet from the opposition, during which they have been vocally demanding Kumar’s resignation over concerns related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.

Details of the Public Impeachment

According to sources within the Congress party, multiple motions for the impeachment of Gyanesh Kumar have been submitted in both Houses of Parliament. However, these motions have been rejected despite the opposition claiming to have the requisite numbers. A senior Congress MP stated, “Now, we have no choice but to impeach him in public.”

Earlier this year, in April, the presiding officers of both Houses dismissed the opposition’s attempts to impeach the Chief Election Commissioner. In preparation for the mock impeachment event, prominent Congress figures, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and KC Venugopal, have been involved in organizing the proceedings at Kharge’s residence.

Sources indicate that a stage has been constructed on the lawn of Kharge’s bungalow where the public impeachment will feature a mock hearing, replicating parliamentary and court proceedings. Participants will include INDIA bloc MPs, legal experts, and citizens affected by the SIR. One source described the event as “like a short play where everyone will have a role,” emphasizing the inclusion of common people.

During Thursday’s meeting at Kharge’s home, it was announced that former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will preside over the session. The motion for impeachment will be introduced by Mallikarjun Kharge, and each party within the INDIA bloc will have an opportunity to contribute to the proceedings proportionate to their representation in Parliament. Rahul Gandhi will deliver the closing arguments, and the event will conclude with the singing of India’s national anthem.

Rally Preparations and Mobilization Efforts

In addition to the public impeachment, the INDIA bloc is gearing up for a rally at Ramlila Maidan on Sunday, with top Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi and KC Venugopal, actively coordinating mobilization efforts. The Congress party has tasked its western Uttar Pradesh unit with bringing at least 25,000 participants to the rally. A senior leader from the state reported that there is a healthy competitive spirit among Congress units in neighboring states, such as Haryana, to ensure significant turnout.

Haryana Congress leaders, including MP Deepender Hooda, have made a concerted effort to ensure that their state provides the largest contingent of attendees. Hooda issued a challenge, stating, “We issue this challenge on behalf of the Haryana Congress.”

To facilitate participation, Congress MPs are arranging accommodations for attendees, with many planning to arrive in Delhi a day early to circumvent potential logistical issues. A senior Congress MP expressed confidence about overcoming anticipated obstacles, stating, “We knew the government would create some hurdles. But those who want to come will reach Ramlila Maidan.”

Rahul Gandhi’s Call to Action

Rahul Gandhi has publicly encouraged citizens to join the rally, framing it as a significant protest for the nation. In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), he stated, “This is not a march for any single political party — it is a march for the very soul of India.” He further invited those frustrated with the current administration to participate, asserting that the march is crucial for defending democracy and the Constitution.

Gandhi’s appeal was inclusive, urging students and civil society members to join regardless of their political affiliations. He emphasized the importance of collective action, stating, “Come and join us. It will be a fantastic march, and it’s a march for the soul of this country.”

The upcoming events are seen as critical moments for the opposition as they seek to galvanize support and amplify their calls for accountability regarding the conduct of the Election Commission, amidst broader concerns about democratic processes in India.
