The recognition comes during a landmark year in Dr. Medavaram’s career as she serves as President of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), the largest ethnic physicians’ organization in the United States, representing more than 120,000 physicians, residents, fellows, and medical students of Indian origin. Throughout her decades-long involvement with AAPI, she has served in nearly every major leadership role, including Regional Director, Secretary, Vice President, President-Elect, and Convention Chair, becoming one of the organization’s most respected and influential voices.

In honoring Dr. Medavaram, IAPC leaders praised not only her accomplishments in medicine but also her ability to unite people, mentor future leaders, and build institutions that continue to serve communities long after her direct involvement.

Accepting the award, Dr. Medavaram reflected on the values that have guided her journey from medical school in India to becoming one of the leading physician voices in the Indian American community.

“This recognition is deeply meaningful because it celebrates a lifetime of service. Every stage of my journey has been shaped by mentors, colleagues, patients, and family members who believed in me and inspired me to give back. Whatever I have achieved belongs as much to them as it does to me.”

A graduate of Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad, Dr. Medavaram completed her residency at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Chicago and went on to build a distinguished career in clinical medicine, academic teaching, and healthcare leadership. She currently serves in multiple leadership and clinical roles across the Chicago region and has remained deeply committed to educating future physicians.

Throughout her career, mentorship has remained one of her central passions. “Teaching and mentoring are not separate from patient care. They are extensions of our responsibility to build a stronger and more compassionate healthcare system.”

Colleagues describe Dr. Medavaram as a leader whose influence extends well beyond medicine. Her contributions have strengthened professional organizations, promoted healthcare equity, expanded community outreach, and inspired countless young physicians to pursue leadership roles of their own.

As the President of AAPI, she has championed unity, advocacy, physician wellness, mentorship, and greater engagement among younger members of the organization. Her leadership philosophy has remained consistent throughout her career.

“Leadership is not about titles. It is about responsibility, accountability, and the willingness to work together for the greater good.” She has repeatedly emphasized that diversity should be viewed as a source of strength rather than division.

“Our diversity is our heritage. Our unity is our strength. Our service is our legacy.”

Dr. Satheesh Kathula, Chair of IAPC BOD and past president of AAPI,  at the awards ceremony noted that these principles have defined her approach to leadership for decades. He highlighted “her ability to bring people together, encourage constructive dialogue, and create opportunities for future generations of physicians and community leaders.”

According to IAPC leaders, Dr. Medavaram’s career represents the very ideals embodied by the Lifetime Achievement Award: excellence, integrity, service, and a long-term commitment to making a difference. Her work in medicine, education, advocacy, and humanitarian initiatives has positively influenced patients, physicians, and communities both in the United States and abroad.
