CINCINNATI, OH: The Indo-American Press Club (IAPC) honored globally renowned ophthalmologist, educator, humanitarian, and philanthropist Dr. V. K. Raju with its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award during the Grand Gala of the 11th International Media Conference (IMC 2026) held in Cincinnati, Ohio on Saturday, October 17th, 2026. The award recognizes a lifetime dedicated to restoring sight, preventing blindness, advancing medical education, and serving underserved communities across the world.

For five decades, Dr. V. K. Raju has combined excellence in medicine with an unwavering commitment to humanitarian service. Born and educated in Andhra Pradesh, India, and later trained in the United Kingdom and the United States, he became one of the world’s most respected ophthalmologists and a leading advocate for the elimination of childhood blindness. Today, he serves as Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at West Virginia University and Adjunct Professor at the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University.

As Founder and Past President of the Eye Foundation of America (EFA), established in 1979, Dr. Raju has led transformative initiatives dedicated to making quality eye care accessible to vulnerable populations. Under his leadership, EFA’s programs have expanded to more than 25 countries, screening millions of patients and facilitating hundreds of thousands of sight-restoring surgeries. He also played a key role in establishing the Goutami Eye Institute and Srikiran Eye Institute in India, institutions that continue to provide specialized eye care and training.

Accepting the honor, Dr. V. K. Raju reflected on the philosophy that has guided his life’s work. “The reward for work well done is an opportunity to do more.”

Quoting author Pearl S. Buck, he noted that true recognition is not an end-point but a renewed call to service.

Dr. Raju emphasized that his humanitarian work began early in his professional journey.

“Most people talk about how busy they are, family responsibilities and other obligations. I started this work very early in my career. One need not wait till we retire.”

He encouraged professionals from every field to engage in service while actively pursuing their careers, stressing that commitment to community and humanity should never be postponed.

Addressing IMC delegates, particularly media professionals, Dr. Raju highlighted the growing importance of communication in public health and social awareness.

“Media, whether electronic, audio, or visual, shapes human perception and especially health education.”

He observed that significant misinformation and misconceptions continue to exist among the public regarding health-related issues.

“Many misconceptions are among the public. Journalists have a great responsibility. First they should educate themselves to educate the public and clear misconceptions.”

His remarks resonated strongly with the audience of journalists, editors, publishers, broadcasters, and media leaders attending the International Media Conference.

Dr. Raju also shared his views on personal well-being and lifelong engagement.

“Volunteering and creative writing, and of course exercise, are among the best antidotes to present-day stress.”

He encouraged individuals to remain intellectually active, physically healthy, and socially engaged regardless of age or profession.

In a gesture reflecting his enduring commitment to education and mentorship, Dr. Raju extended an open invitation to the media community.

“I will be glad to talk to you all on Zoom or other platforms. If you have any ideas, I have the time.”

One of the most memorable moments of his remarks was a tribute to his mentor in London, whose wisdom profoundly shaped his approach to healthcare, education, and public service:

“My mentor in London used to say there are three solutions for every problem. First, education. Second, education. Third, education.”

That philosophy remains at the heart of Dr. Raju’s mission to combat preventable blindness through awareness, early intervention, professional training, and community engagement. The Eye Foundation of America continues to emphasize education as the most effective and sustainable tool for improving public health outcomes.

Over the course of his distinguished career, Dr. Raju has authored numerous scientific publications, book chapters, and books, while mentoring generations of physicians and healthcare professionals. His contributions have earned him national and international recognition, including numerous humanitarian and medical honors. Yet those who know him best often point not to the awards, but to the countless lives transformed through the gift of sight and hope.

The presentation of the Indo-American Press Club Lifetime Achievement Award at IMC 2026 celebrated not only an extraordinary physician, but also a visionary humanitarian whose life’s work demonstrates how dedication, compassion, and education can transform communities around the world. As the audience rose in applause, the honor underscored a legacy that extends far beyond medicine, inspiring future generations to serve humanity with purpose, humility, and action.
