WhatsApp has launched a new feature allowing users to create usernames, enabling communication without disclosing phone numbers. This change marks a significant shift in the platform’s approach to user identity, reflecting growing concerns about privacy and security.
WhatsApp, the globally popular messaging platform owned by Meta, has announced the introduction of usernames, a feature aimed at enhancing user privacy and diversifying communication options. This development, which allows users to connect without revealing their phone numbers, is one of the most significant changes in the app’s history, a shift that has been anticipated for years as competitors like Telegram and Signal have adopted similar systems.
The username feature is currently being rolled out globally, following an initial reservation period that has already begun. With over three billion users worldwide, including an estimated 850 million in India alone, the implications of this update could be profound, fundamentally changing how users interact on the platform.
Understanding WhatsApp Usernames
Usernames on WhatsApp will serve as an additional layer of identity for users, allowing them to share a unique identifier instead of their phone number. This feature is primarily designed to enhance privacy. When fully implemented, users will not automatically disclose their phone numbers when messaging or calling someone for the first time, provided that the recipient does not already have that number saved in their contacts.
This change could be particularly beneficial in a variety of contexts, such as networking events, community groups, and business interactions, where users may prefer not to share their personal phone numbers with strangers.
However, it is essential to note that phone numbers will remain a fundamental component of WhatsApp accounts. Users will still need a phone number to set up and use the app, and those who have a user’s number saved will continue to reach them through that number.
Mechanics of Username Functionality
Users will be able to select a unique username ranging from three to 35 characters, which can include Latin letters, numbers, periods, and underscores. WhatsApp has established guidelines to prevent the registration of usernames that consist solely of numbers or contain restricted words and phrases. Every username will begin with an “@” symbol, clearly differentiating it from traditional phone numbers and display names.
For those who struggle to find an available username, WhatsApp provides a built-in username generator to suggest unique alternatives. Users will retain the option to change or delete their usernames at any time. Should a username be deleted, the person’s phone number will become visible in situations where it would otherwise remain concealed. WhatsApp has stated that users will have a 14-day window to reclaim a deleted username.
Contacting Users via Usernames
Once the feature is fully operational, individuals will be able to initiate conversations by entering a specific username into the app. Unlike platforms such as Instagram or Facebook, WhatsApp will not provide a searchable directory of usernames or suggest potential matches, meaning users will need to know the exact username they wish to contact.
Additionally, WhatsApp is implementing a security measure referred to as a “username key,” which users can set to require unknown contacts to enter this key before sending a message for the first time. This key can be modified at the user’s discretion.
Username Reservation Process
To reserve a username, users are instructed to navigate to Settings, tap on Account, and select Username. This early reservation period is crucial given WhatsApp’s substantial user base, as many individuals may seek similar names. Early reservation increases the likelihood of securing a desired username.
Furthermore, users can link their existing Facebook or Instagram usernames during this reservation period. Meta is prioritizing the reservation of existing usernames from these platforms, allowing users who wish to maintain consistency across their accounts to do so through Meta’s Accounts Centre, a centralized hub for managing settings and security across Meta’s applications.
Concerns and Safeguards
While the introduction of usernames is designed to enhance user privacy, it has also raised concerns about potential scams and impersonation, particularly in India, WhatsApp’s largest market. Entrepreneurs and industry leaders have expressed apprehension regarding the possibility of fraudsters creating deceptive usernames that closely resemble those of well-known personalities, which could mislead unsuspecting users.
Entrepreneur Ankur Warikoo highlighted the risks, noting that many users may not pay close attention to verification indicators, leaving them vulnerable to impersonation attempts. He emphasized the need for robust anti-abuse systems to mitigate these risks, especially in a country with a vast user base like India.
In response to these concerns, WhatsApp has outlined several protective measures. The platform is reserving usernames associated with public figures, celebrities, and verified Meta accounts to ensure that only legitimate owners can claim them. Additionally, WhatsApp is implementing automated systems to detect and remove accounts that exhibit typical patterns of impersonation and abuse.
To further safeguard users, WhatsApp plans to limit how many new contacts can be reached through usernames and block repeated attempts to guess a user’s username key. The frequency with which users can change their usernames is also restricted, and accounts may face revocation or banning if impersonation or scams are detected.
Verifying Unknown Contacts
When users receive messages from unknown contacts, WhatsApp will display a details card containing relevant information, such as whether the account is newly created, the country from which the message originates, and any shared groups. This feature allows users to make informed decisions about whether to add the contact, block them, or report suspicious activity.
WhatsApp also encourages users to conduct voice or video calls to verify identities before sharing sensitive information or responding to requests. For contacts already saved in a user’s phone, the app will continue to display the saved name rather than the username, maintaining familiarity and ease of communication.
