“The event embodied the essence of International Yoga Day — bringing people together through yoga, meditation, music and a shared commitment to peace, wellness and community.”

Thousands of participants gathered at the Naperville Yard Sports Complex on June 14 for what organizers described as Chicagoland’s largest International Yoga Day celebration, transforming the venue into a hub of wellness, mindfulness and community engagement.

Organized by Mindful Meditation Yoga under the leadership of founder and president Anu Malhotra, the event brought together community members, elected officials, spiritual leaders and partner organizations to mark International Yoga Day 2026 through yoga, meditation, music and cultural performances.

The celebration began with a musical prelude featuring the Yoga Geet Sang Sang Chalo, led by Bhakti Yoga Program Director Vipul Srivastava and a team of vocalists and musicians. The performance set the tone for a day centered on peace, wellness and collective harmony.

Master of Ceremonies Dr. Radhika Chimata welcomed attendees and highlighted the organization’s mission of promoting self-care, personal growth and community well-being through yoga and meditation.

Among the dignitaries present were Naperville Mayor Scott Wehrli, First Lady Linda Wehrli, Councilwoman Supna Jain and later, Consul General of India in Chicago, Somnath Ghosh.

Addressing the gathering, Anu Malhotra emphasized yoga’s role in fostering physical, mental and emotional well-being while encouraging participants to embrace a lifestyle rooted in mindfulness and balance.

A special recognition ceremony honored Anu Malhotra for more than three decades of service in promoting yoga, meditation and holistic wellness. The awards were presented by Dr. Vijay Prabhakar, founder of the American Multiethnic Commission and chairman of Global Eye Magazine USA.

Presenting the recognition, Dr. Prabhakar praised Malhotra’s longstanding commitment to community well-being and spiritual growth.

“She has spent more than three decades spreading the timeless wisdom and transformative practices of yoga and meditation to promote peace, wellness, and holistic living,” he said.

The event also featured a performance titled Angel Moves, accompanied by devotional music and participation from the International Day of Yoga leadership team.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the presentation of the Seva Ratna Award to Rajat Sahani and Meenakshi Sahani of Shimla Peppers in recognition of their contribution of complimentary meals for participants attending the event.

A ceremonial lamp-lighting followed, bringing together dignitaries, sponsors and community leaders in a symbolic gesture representing knowledge, unity and inner awakening.

The centerpiece of the event was a large-scale yoga and meditation session led by Anu Malhotra. Participants of all ages joined in guided breathing exercises, yoga postures and meditation practices, reflecting the global theme of International Yoga Day.

The program was organized in collaboration with the Consulate General of India in Chicago and supported by numerous community organizations, healthcare professionals, businesses and cultural groups.

Organizers said the event aimed to promote wellness, cultural understanding and community unity while reinforcing yoga’s message of harmony and holistic health.

Reflecting on the broader significance of the gathering, organizers noted that yoga continues to serve as a powerful tool for personal well-being and collective connection.

“One conscious breath can ripple outward to heal families, communities, and even the world,” the event message noted.

As thousands rolled up their yoga mats and gathered for lunch, the celebration ended not just as a community event, but as a reminder of yoga’s enduring ability to bring people together across cultures, generations and backgrounds.
