October 14, 2026 — Asia Society is pleased to announce the appointment of China expert Dr. David Shullman as a Vice President of the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) based at its offices in Washington, D.C. Working closely with ASPI Senior Vice President Wendy Cutler, he will oversee its initiatives addressing a range of pressing Asian security, technology, and sustainability issues.
“David brings a keen understanding of China and a wealth of experience in the intelligence community,” said Asia Society Global President and CEO The Hon. Dr. Kevin Rudd AC. “As we further develop ASPI’s Washington footprint, David will play a critical role in the D.C. operation, overseeing security and sustainability initiatives, and collaborating with ASPI’s Center for China Analysis.”
Dr. Shullman comes to Asia Society from the National Intelligence Council, where he served as the principal intelligence advisor on China to the White House, Cabinet, and Congressional leadership. He led the U.S. Intelligence Community’s strategic analysis on China, driving decision-making on Taiwan-related risks, supply chain resilience, trade, and technology.
Earlier, Dr. Shullman was Senior Director of the Global China Hub at the Atlantic Council, where he led research efforts and convenings on China across the security, economic, and technological domains. He was also a senior advisor at the International Republican Institute, and has served as a Deputy National Intelligence Officer for East Asia, and as a senior China analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency.
Dr. Shullman has offered testimony on China topics before both houses of Congress and publishes regularly in outlets such as Foreign Affairs and The Washington Post. A frequent media commentator on China, his analysis has been featured in outlets such as the Financial Times, The New York Times, Politico, CNN, and NPR.
Dr. Shullman is concurrently a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, a Visiting Professor of the Practice of Global Affairs at Notre Dame University, and a Senior Advisor at Wirescreen—a risk intelligence platform on Chinese corporations.
