Vivek Ramaswamy, a Republican candidate for Ohio governor, has seen his net worth soar to $2.3 billion, primarily due to significant gains from Roivant Sciences, the biopharmaceutical company he founded. If elected, he could become the second-richest governor in the United States.

Vivek Ramaswamy, a prominent business figure and current candidate for Ohio governor, has witnessed a remarkable increase in his wealth, which is now estimated at $2.3 billion. This surge is largely attributed to the rising stock price of Roivant Sciences, a biopharmaceutical company he founded in 2014. The implications of his financial success are significant, especially as he campaigns for the Republican nomination ahead of the November elections.

Wealth Increase: Key Drivers

According to Forbes, Ramaswamy’s estimated wealth has more than doubled since March 2025, when it was reportedly around $1 billion. The substantial increase in his fortune positions him as a potentially influential player in Ohio politics and could reshape perceptions of wealth in the political arena. Should Ramaswamy win the gubernatorial race, he would become the second-richest governor in the United States, trailing only President Donald Trump, with an estimated net worth of $7 billion, and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, who is valued at approximately $4.2 billion.

Roivant Sciences: A Financial Powerhouse

The primary factor contributing to Ramaswamy’s wealth is the performance of Roivant Sciences, which went public through a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) in 2021. The company’s shares are currently trading at around $40, resulting in a market capitalization of approximately $29 billion. Since the beginning of 2026, Roivant’s stock has appreciated by roughly 85 percent, and it has nearly quadrupled in value over the past two years. Several pivotal developments have contributed to this rally, including positive Phase 3 data for brepocitinib, a drug targeting dermatomyositis, and the recent FDA approval of Lisraya, an oral treatment.

Additionally, Roivant reported encouraging Phase 2 results for mosliciguat, a drug aimed at treating pulmonary hypertension. A multi-billion-dollar litigation settlement with Moderna in March has also bolstered the company’s financial standing, further solidifying Ramaswamy’s wealth.

Stock Sales: A Strategic Move

Throughout his campaign, Ramaswamy has capitalized on the rising stock price by selling portions of his Roivant stake. He reportedly made around $106 million before taxes from share sales disclosed in November and December of the previous year. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, he sold approximately $400 million worth of stock. Assuming a similar pace of sales continues, estimates suggest that he could have sold a total of around $700 million worth of Roivant stock during the first half of the year, bringing his total sales to approximately $1.2 billion during his gubernatorial campaign.

Remaining Stake and Financial Implications

Ramaswamy’s remaining stake in Roivant has also diminished over time. At the end of 2025, he and his wife held 61.8 million shares, representing an 8.7 percent ownership in the company. However, by the following quarter, their holdings had decreased to 38.9 million shares, reducing their ownership to 5.4 percent. Due to these changes, Ramaswamy is no longer mandated to disclose additional stock sales to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, as his ownership has fallen below 5 percent. This shift means he may currently possess as much as $1.3 billion in cash and liquid securities following his stock sales.

Potential Wealth and Campaign Issues

Had Ramaswamy retained all of his Roivant shares, his fortune could have been significantly larger. After Roivant’s public offering in 2021, he initially held a 10.5 percent stake, translating to around 74.4 million shares, which would be valued at approximately $2.8 billion today. Ramaswamy also has a notable stake of around $130 million in Chapter, a Medicare-navigation company he co-founded in 2020. Chapter recently raised $100 million, achieving a $3 billion valuation, which is double its previous valuation of $1.5 billion.

Ramaswamy’s billionaire status has emerged as a focal point in the Ohio governor’s race. Democratic nominee Amy Acton has criticized Ramaswamy’s wealth and private-jet lifestyle, contrasting it with the financial struggles faced by everyday Ohioans. In response, Ramaswamy has embraced his entrepreneurial background, emphasizing his self-made wealth. His ascent reflects a broader trend of Indian Americans increasingly influencing U.S. business and politics, with notable figures like Vinod Khosla and Nikki Haley making significant impacts in their respective fields.

As the November election approaches, Ramaswamy’s financial status will likely continue to evoke debate and scrutiny, shaping the political landscape in Ohio and potentially beyond.
