From captaining India on the cricket field to serving as a senior executive at Air India and becoming one of the country’s pioneering women cricket commentators, Anjum Chopra has built a career that bridges sport, corporate leadership, and public engagement.
Few Indian sportspersons have successfully built careers across as many domains as Anjum Chopra. A former captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, an accomplished broadcaster, corporate leader, author and motivational speaker, Chopra continues to demonstrate how sporting excellence can translate into leadership beyond the playing field.
Chopra represented India for nearly two decades, making her international debut in 1995 and going on to play more than 150 international matches across Tests, One-Day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals. She became the first Indian woman to score 1,000 ODI runs and was among the pioneers who helped lay the foundation for the growth of women’s cricket in the country. She also captained India during a transformative period, leading the team to several historic victories, including India’s first overseas Test victory in South Africa.
Her contributions to Indian cricket have been recognized with some of the country’s highest sporting honors, including the Arjuna Award in 2007 and the Padma Shri in 2014. She also became the first Indian woman cricketer to receive honorary life membership of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
Away from cricket, Chopra has steadily built a parallel corporate career. She currently serves as Senior Assistant General Manager at Air India Limited, balancing executive responsibilities with her continued involvement in sports and public engagement.
Even after retiring from international cricket in 2012, Chopra remained closely connected to the game through broadcasting. She is among India’s pioneering women cricket commentators, providing analysis for international cricket and the Indian Premier League. Her commentary has earned recognition for combining technical insight with the perspective of a former international captain while contributing to greater female representation in sports broadcasting.
Beyond broadcasting, Chopra is also an author and motivational speaker. Drawing on her experience as an elite athlete and management professional, she regularly speaks on leadership, teamwork, resilience, performance under pressure, and personal growth.
Her journey reflects the expanding opportunities available to women athletes beyond competitive sport. By successfully managing leadership responsibilities in corporate India while remaining an influential voice in cricket broadcasting, Chopra has demonstrated how a sporting career can evolve into a multifaceted professional journey.
Today, whether in the commentary box, the corporate office, or on leadership platforms, Anjum Chopra continues to inspire aspiring athletes and professionals alike through her commitment to excellence across every field she has pursued.
