S.S. Rajamouli, renowned for his groundbreaking films like ‘RRR’ and the ‘Baahubali’ series, provided updates on his forthcoming film ‘Varanasi’ and the animated spin-off ‘Baahubali: The Eternal War’ during a recent interview.

S.S. Rajamouli, a titan of Indian cinema known for his epic storytelling and cinematic innovation, recently shared insights into his upcoming film ‘Varanasi,’ which is set to premiere in April 2027. The film promises to elevate the scale of Indian filmmaking with a narrative that spans thousands of years, incorporating diverse locations, including an asteroid threat to the historic city of Varanasi. This ambitious project continues Rajamouli’s trend of pushing cinematic boundaries, following the success of films like ‘RRR’ and the ‘Baahubali’ franchise.

Rajamouli’s comments came after he participated in a work-in-progress panel at the Annecy Animation Festival, where he introduced the creative team behind the animated feature ‘Baahubali: The Eternal War.’ In an interview with Variety, he noted significant progress on ‘Varanasi,’ stating, “What I can say is we have completed a major portion of the shoot; all the important big spectacle action sequences are done. We are now into doing the smaller, interconnecting scenes, so hopefully, by September, maybe a little bit into October, we should be finishing shooting.”

Creative Vision and IMAX Shooting

Rajamouli emphasized the importance of the IMAX format in his filmmaking process. He remarked that the sequences were designed with IMAX in mind from the outset, clarifying, “From the beginning, we knew the sequences that were conceived would be best justified in [the] IMAX format – we didn’t change anything just for the format.” This approach highlights his commitment to ensuring that the film’s visual storytelling remains coherent and impactful across different formats. He acknowledged that while his preference lies with CinemaScope, the adaptation to IMAX brought about only minor adjustments, ultimately enhancing the film’s visual grandeur.

Simultaneously, the ‘Baahubali’ franchise is expanding its narrative horizons with ‘The Eternal War,’ directed by Ishan Shukla. Rajamouli expressed confidence in Shukla’s ability to carry forward the franchise’s legacy. He noted, “We have a whole world of ‘Baahubali’ that’s already been written, so we don’t need to dwell when we step into the world of ‘Baahubali.’” This statement underscores the complexity and depth of the ‘Baahubali’ universe, which has developed a rich backstory that allows for seamless expansion into new narratives.

Animation and Global Reach

Rajamouli also discussed the evolving landscape of animation in India and its potential to enhance the storytelling of ‘Baahubali.’ He articulated a belief in the success of this medium, stating, “We always believed ‘Baahubali’ will find success in the medium. It is just about finding the right person, right team, and the right expansion of the story.” The decision to adapt ‘Baahubali’ into animation reflects a strategic move to tap into a medium that can convey the epic scale and emotional depth characteristic of Indian narratives. He expressed excitement about Shukla’s vision to incorporate various elements from Indian mythology, which could allow the story to explore vast and intricate realms, thereby broadening its appeal.

During the work-in-progress presentation at the Annecy Animation Festival, the creative team underscored their aim to resonate with an international audience. Rajamouli noted the distinct qualities of Indian storytelling, stating, “I think the characters, the emotions, and how the emotions are played are very colorful; I think that is very unique to India, and I think the audiences… are definitely waiting for more.” His optimism surrounding the animation medium indicates a belief that it offers greater flexibility to express the vibrant emotional landscape of Indian stories, potentially attracting viewers beyond traditional demographics.

Significance of IMAX in Hyderabad

The release of ‘Varanasi’ is strategically timed with the return of IMAX theaters to Hyderabad, a city with a rich cinematic history. Rajamouli expressed his enthusiasm for this development, stating, “It was high time we had IMAX theaters in Hyderabad, because for me, Hyderabad and the states of Telugu-speaking people Andhra and Telangana are the biggest film buffs in the entire world.” His comments reflect a deep appreciation for the region’s diverse film culture, which encompasses various languages and genres, reinforcing the demand for advanced cinematic experiences.

Rajamouli reminisced about the historical significance of IMAX in Hyderabad, recalling how the Prasad IMAX was once home to one of the best 70mm projectors. He lamented the decline of IMAX presence in the region following the transition to digital formats but expressed delight at the prospect of IMAX returning to Hyderabad. His advocacy for the reintroduction of IMAX not only highlights the local demand for sophisticated film presentations but also signifies a broader trend towards elevating cinematic standards in Indian cinema.

As anticipation builds for both ‘Varanasi’ and ‘The Eternal War,’ Rajamouli’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of Indian cinema is evident. His ability to blend spectacle with emotional storytelling positions him as a leading figure in the industry, promising to captivate audiences around the globe with his unique vision. The developments surrounding these projects not only reflect Rajamouli’s individual artistry but also signify a transformative moment for Indian cinema as it seeks to gain recognition on the global stage.
