The Indian American Forum, under the leadership of Chairperson Mrs. Indu Jaiswal, organized a Colon Cancer Awareness Session at Levittown Hall on March 26. Despite limited notice, the event attracted a substantial audience interested in learning about the significance of screening. EC Member Mrs. Jyoti Gupta introduced Mrs. Jaiswal, who extended a warm welcome to attendees and invited the newly elected President, Mr. Vimal Goyal, to address the gathering. Mr. Goyal discussed his personal experience with colonoscopy and emphasized the importance of regular screenings and proactive health measures.

The session featured expert presentations from Gastroenterologists Dr. Preeti Mehta and Dr. Neelesh Mehta, as well as Oncologist Dr. Jagmohan Kalra. The speakers highlighted the critical role of early detection and routine screenings in reducing the risk of colon cancer. Attendees received insightful information regarding risk factors, symptoms, and current screening guidelines, empowering them to make informed decisions about their health.

Emerging research cited by the doctors linked microplastics, heavy metals, and certain industrial chemicals to increased cancer risk, augmenting established connections to genetic predispositions, lifestyle choices, and dietary habits. The medical experts recommended a simple, home-prepared diet over restaurant or microwave-cooked meals for effective prevention.

A key focus was placed on the necessity of scheduling colonoscopies, particularly for those who had not undergone the procedure. To address concerns about preparation, the physicians explained the evolution of simpler methods—from drinking large volumes of water to consuming smaller quantities of liquid and now to swallowing tablets—making the process more accessible and less daunting.

During the question-and-answer session, attendees raised a vast range of queries. The doctors answered each question with clarity and encouraged the audience to seek prompt medical advice.

The event included notable participants such as Mr. Kanak Golia, Mrs. Prabha Golia (CEO – Perfume World), Dr. Yashpal Arya, Dr. Urmilesh Arya, Prof. Inderjit Saluja of Indian Panorama, Mrs. Beena Kothari (President – AIA), Mrs. Bina Sabapathy (Founder/President – IACV), Mr. Lalit Aery (Former President – IALI), Mr Govind Gupta ( Vice President IALI )Mrs. Flora Parekh (Founder/President – Gift of Life), Mrs. Rita K. Batheja, RDN (IDA International), Mr. Deepak Sachdev (President – Shri Ram Sharanam), Harvinder Bhatia , Sujata Seth ( Treasurer IALI ) among others. The proceedings were thoroughly documented by Mr. Akshat Kaul. Mrs. Indu Jaiswal concluded the session with a vote of thanks.

Attendees were greeted with hot samosas and a selection of tea or coffee upon arrival. The evening concluded with a sumptuous dinner provided by the Indian American Forum, fostering a congenial and collaborative environment throughout the informative session.
