US Passport Drops Out of Top 10 as Singapore, South Korea Lead Global Power Rankings

For the first time in two decades, the United States has slipped out of the top 10 in the list of the world’s most powerful passports, now ranking 12th globally—tied with Malaysia.

The ranking, based on the number of destinations a passport holder can access without needing a visa, places Singapore at the top spot. Following closely are South Korea and Japan, each with expansive visa-free reach.

Observers say this shift reflects changes in global mobility trends and “soft power” influence. The U.S. decline has been linked to stricter immigration policies, decreasing reciprocity in visa access with other nations, and recent diplomatic decisions by countries like Brazil, China, and Vietnam that no longer allow visa-free entry for American citizens.

As the strength of the U.S. passport wanes, more Americans are reportedly exploring dual nationality as a way to retain broader travel freedom—signaling evolving attitudes around citizenship and mobility.
