India’s Tata Opens First Overseas Defence Production Plant in Morocco

Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) has launched its first overseas defence manufacturing facility in Berrechid, Morocco, signalling India’s entry into international defence production. This is the company’s first plant outside India and marks a major expansion of its global presence.

The new facility, called Tata Advanced Systems Maroc (TASM), will assemble the WhAP 8×8 Wheeled Armoured Platform, blending Indian design with Moroccan labor. Initially, around 35% of components will be sourced locally, with the goal of raising that to 50% over time. The plant is expected to employ about 200 workers when fully operational.

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Moroccan counterpart Abdelatif Loudyi presided over the inauguration, underscoring the strategic significance of the project. This move is expected to deepen defence and industrial ties between India and Morocco.

By establishing a local production base, Morocco aims to enhance its military autonomy and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers. For India, the facility presents an opportunity to position itself as a global defence exporter rather than merely a buyer.

Inaugurated across a 20,000-square-meter campus, the plant is already operational and producing units under contract with the Moroccan government. Initial deliveries are expected to begin in the coming months.

The WhAP 8×8, co-developed by India’s DRDO and TASL, is a modular armoured platform designed for versatility, protection, and mobility in varied terrain. Its features include mine and ballistic protection, independent suspension, central tire inflation, and compatibility with multiple weapon systems.

This facility marks the first defence manufacturing plant by an Indian private firm in Africa. Over time, it is expected to support not only Morocco’s needs but also defence exports to friendly nations across the region.
