India has set another remarkable milestone in the chess world, as three-year-old Sarwagya Singh Kushwaha has officially become the youngest player in history to earn a FIDE rating. At just 3 years, 7 months, and 20 days, he breaks the previous record set by fellow Indian prodigy Anish Sarkar.
Kushwaha, who studies in nursery school in Madhya Pradesh, has achieved a rapid rating of 1572. According to FIDE rules, players must defeat at least one FIDE-rated opponent to be listed in the global rating system — a requirement this young prodigy surpassed by beating three rated players across various state and national events.
A FIDE rating measures a player’s performance strength, while ranking determines their position relative to other players. For context, top-ranked rapid player Magnus Carlsen holds a rating of 2824.
Sarwagya’s father, Siddharth Singh, expressed immense joy at the achievement, telling ETV Bharat:
“It is a tremendous honour for us that our son has become the youngest chess player in the world to achieve a FIDE rating. We hope he one day becomes a grandmaster.”
With this extraordinary feat, India continues to establish its presence as a global powerhouse in developing young chess talent.
