Indian Student Arrivals in the U.S. Plunge 44% in 2024, Marking Sharpest Decline Since Pandemic

Indian student arrivals in the United States have experienced a significant decline, with a 44% drop in 2024 compared to the previous year. This marks the sharpest decrease since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to data from the U.S. International Trade Administration, 41,540 Indian students entered the U.S. on F and M visas in August 2024, the lowest number since 2020. The total arrivals for June, July, and August combined were 63,112, also the lowest since the pandemic.

In comparison, Chinese student arrivals during the same period were more than double, with 86,647 arriving in August alone. However, China’s numbers also saw a decline from the previous year.

The decrease in Indian student numbers follows a trend of declining F-1 visa issuances, which fell by 27% from March to May 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. This reduction is attributed to various factors, including changes in U.S. immigration policies and increased competition from other countries offering attractive educational opportunities.

Despite this downturn, Indian students continue to be a significant presence in U.S. higher education, and institutions are exploring strategies to reverse this trend and attract more international students.
