India and China to Resume Direct Flights After Five-Year Suspension

India and China are preparing to restart direct flights later this month, ending a suspension that has lasted over five years. This move is seen as a step toward cautiously improving bilateral relations.

The suspension began in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and escalating border tensions. Despite being each other’s largest trading partners, the lack of direct air connectivity has been a significant barrier to stronger ties.

Resuming flights follows a series of diplomatic engagements, including discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Both leaders emphasized development partnership, boosting trade relations, and maintaining peace along the disputed border.

The restoration of direct flights is expected to ease travel for business, tourism, and diplomacy, potentially increasing economic and cultural exchanges between the two countries.
